Jeremy watched the truck pull out of the parking lot and sighed irritably. His mate was a werewolf, a werewolf of all things. He wasn't prejudiced of any species, but the fact remained that she was a werewolf, which meant that she was much more prone to be frightened or distrustful of him. Being a vampire definitely had its downfalls, and this had to be the most unexpected of the group.

Luckily, Jeremy wasn't actively trying to kill Kailee in any way. The vampires after her were rogues, ones who had strayed from the peace treaties created a millennia ago. They were more known to werewolves nowadays, especially the youngest, since very few bond vampires, the kind ones, made themselves known as they hadn't caused any type of trouble to be recognized.

Jeremy knew exactly who Kailee was, anyhow. His coven had been in contact with the pack she had come across a while back, and when the Alpha had informed them of her recent arrival and quick dismissal, his coven had been quick to try and help out from the sidelines (bunch of good that was doing, at any rate).

Jeremy's lips twisted in indecision before his eyes sparked, set determinedly. Consequences be demanded, he was going to properly introduce himself to his mate and make sure she knew she had nothing to fear from him.

The sound of a knock on the front door caught Nick's immediate attention. He clicked the TV off with the remote and tossed it on the cushion next to him, pushing himself up and heading to open the door.

He undid the lock and pulled it open, mouth parting to ask what the mysterious man wanted, but his eyes caught sight of the man's red ones at that moment. Nick's eyes widened in fear and before the vampire could open his mouth, Nick had slammed the door in his face.

Nick shot like a bullet up the stairs and threw open the door to Kailee's room, barging in. "Kailee!"

"Yes?" She asked, turning her head to look at him in concern.

"Vampire at...the door," he panted, out of breath from running so fast.

"Why would a vampire knock?" She asked, most of the question being directed at herself, though it did nothing to stop Nick from hearing it. He thought about it for a moment and realized that her suspicious confusion was warranted.

She got up and hustled down the steps, Nick following right behind. She made her way to the front door and opened it after only a second of hesitation. Nick peeked around Kailee's back to see the vampire still standing there in the exact spot Nick had left him.

Kailee held Nick to her hip, protecting him. "What do you want, Jeremy?" Kailee questioned coldly. Nick was visibly confused by their apparent recognition of each other, but made no comment.

"I'm not like them, Kailee. I'm a bond vampire," Jeremy told her, but she made no move to let him in or accept his sudden reveal.

"I'm sure," she spat coldly. "Don't get me started on your whole spiel of "I don't want to hurt you, I'm not with them!" It's a load of bull, and I'm the one best equipped to know it. Others have tried that trick on me, and I'm sad to say that it worked once. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. You know how it goes."

"I'm your mate, Kailee," Jeremy tried to explain. "You know that just as well as I do. I'd never hurt you, I wouldn't be able."

"Another screwup in my existence," she spat. "I'm sure that this whole mate thing is just one big miracle for you! It's perfect! You pretend that you love me, you pretend that you'd never hurt me, and when the time finally comes, it's a knife to the back for me and a whole bunch of power for you!" Tears formed in her eyes as she gripped Nick a bit tighter. "Only I would get the mate that wants to murder me with every fiber of his being! I'm just that screwed up, aren't I?"
