(FLASHBACK)
(Introduction of a new character...you'll see)
6 years earlier...
(McKenzie's POV)
I was kind of sad and happy at the same time. Dad needed to go to war again, and he had just come back from 6 months of being gone. Mom had my three-year-old brother Nick on top of taking care of me with her shifts at the hospital, which meant I babysat one too many times a week.
I was being counted on a lot to make dinner, wash dishes, sometimes even do the laundry with Homework and school work. There was always something to be done at my house. It was always busy and nobody spent time with each other because Dad or Mom was never around. it felt lonely. I made my own friends that lived in my head.
My best friend, Amadeus Cho, was one of the friends that I could count on. We've been friends since we were in elementary school together. Even though he wasn't from here, I made him feel like he belonged, so that's how we became best friends. He left too.
Sometimes, I and my family would watch a movie together and laugh watching a simple comedy or a fun family movie about some singing birds or some backtalking spunky girls who were spoiled. Most of all we watch Disney because everyone thinks the movies are hilarious.
I'm all about spending time together, but the one moment I will never forget in my life would be the last time I would see my dad. Ever.
The day I screwed up started with some nice fresh pancakes and some bacon that Dad cooked. He always wears his apron that says, " You'd Better be Bacon Me Out" and it makes no sense every time he wears it to do a barbecue, or make breakfast with Bacon.
Dad then got news from the paperboy that some rebels were causing trouble in some places, tagging places with signs of their army that were fighting our army.
Dad felt like he didn't want to go. He was considering quitting the army because he and Mom got into a disagreement two nights ago, and it was wanted to make them spend some time apart. Of course, they loved each other, but Mom wanted Dad to stay home because she wanted him to spend time with us and her.
That night, Dad came up to me, and he bent on his knees to match up to my height. Dad was naturally tall, so he usually did that to meet my height to talk to me.
"So, Kenzie," He said to me, looking up at me with a smile. I smiled back. "Do you want me to go to war to save people?" He said in a soft voice. I looked up at my dad, his hair all swerved to the side and his famous stubble that always looked uneven, and his blue eyes that I inherited into my face.
"Yeah, Dad, go save some people! You need to save the world!" I said as Dad gave me a look and then lifted me into the air and he threw me into the air and caught me. I loved it when Dad did that to me, and then he let me down and kissed me on the forehead.
"Okay, Baby girl," Dad says as Nick ran downstairs with a fire truck in his hand.
"Daddy! Daddy, look at it! I made fire truck water!" Nick says as Dad picks him up and Nick makes some noises to imitate water.
"Really? Did you save people?" Dad said.
"Yeah, I did," Nick said as Dad zoomed him around, imitating an airplane. I smiled, and I was happy with the things the way they were, and I never wanted it to change.
2 weeks later...
I was fiddling with my phone, playing with the back of the case. Dad's been out in the army for two weeks, and everything seemed dull without him. It wasn't the same. Mom was busy and I had to watch over Nick.
