Magdalena's father was absolutely furious to find out his daughter was engaged to a human. He did not want to listen to her, and told her she was never to see Thomas again. Magdalena refused to accept that and tried to get him to understand that she had fallen in love with a good man, and was not going to give him up. He then told her she had a choice: she could end her relationship with Thomas and marry a Triton like she was supposed to, or she could leave Atlantis and never return.

Magdalena walked around Atlantis, crying and trying to find an answer that would allow her to marry Thomas while still being loyal to her people and her family. Her feet led her to the Fountain of Youth. It was a beautiful treasure and she always felt calmer around it. It was a four layer fountain, gold in color, with silver and blue water streaming down. Each tier had a gemstone in it, signifying something different. The base had a diamond for wealth, strength, and courage. The next tier had an emerald for youth, peace, and hope. The third tier up had a sapphire for wisdom, faithfulness, and protection. The top tier had Magdalena's favorite gemstone, a ruby. The ruby represented love, passion, and... time. She wished her father wasn't forcing her to make this difficult decision, but in thinking that, she realized what the answer was. Someone who truly respected her would never force her to choose between her partner and her family. She chose Thomas not only because she was in love with him, but because he wouldn't force her to choose for him.

Magdalena knew she had to leave Atlantis, but she wanted a piece of home to always have with her. She decided to take the ruby from the Fountain of Youth. She thought the gemstones were just for decoration, and that there would be no significant consequence if one was gone. Once she had her belongings packed she left Atlantis, taking one last look over her shoulder to the waves that hid her home. The pendant that she wore around her neck had a locket that she tucked the ruby away in; she wanted to keep it close to her at all times, not realizing that stealing from the Fountain of Youth brought a curse to life for her and her descendants. It would only be a matter of time before the affects turned her world upside down.

Magdalena and Thomas lived a relatively normal married life for a few years; she kept her powers hidden from everyone except him. They both loved the sea and exploring all the wonderful new lands they could find. One night they docked their ship on an uncharted island so their crew could make repairs. Thomas and Magdalena took a look around and found caves in the shape of crescent moons. Intrigued, they stepped inside and started looking around. All of a sudden Magdalena's necklace started to glow from the ruby. The gemstone created enough light for her to read an inscription carved into the wall:

On sacred land

Full moon will rise

The power of time

Will be recognized

A portal will be created

Through land and sea

Binding all through centuries

The ground started to shake and rocks began to crumble. The cave was crashing down so they ran back out onto the beach. When they looked up at the night sky they saw a full moon, and the ruby was glowing even more. They turned their attention back towards the caves and saw that something was waiting for them.
