·Recap·
All these months, all these slim misses, leading up to one grand finish.
It was time.
----
Keishin Ukai had made plenty of mistakes in the past.
They followed him everywhere, all the poor decisions he made. He couldn't rid himself of them. And he kept making new ones.
Back when Daichi was still training under him to become the next leader, was when everything rolled downhill. And it happened so fast he could barely even comprehend it.
The affair with Takeda, the drug exchange with Washijo and Nekomata, the failed attempt to eliminate that damned Oikawa boy Irihata had been training, the broken trust with all the allies he once claimed he knew.
And now all those bad decisions were coming back to bite him.
All those men he used to have drinks with, laugh boisterously with, discuss control of the city with, had passed on all his bad deeds to their successors - who in turn were coming for all he'd worked for.
The next generation was up and running, and they wouldn't stop until they succeeded.
Kuroo, Bokuto, Oikawa, Ushijima, all the boys he'd watched grow into bosses possibly even stronger than their predecessors.
And Daichi.
Ukai would never forgive himself for the danger he'd carelessly landed on the boy.
None of this war was Daichi's. He was still young and naive, still needed to experience the joys of youth. Like finding a lover, or finding an empty road to speed down at ungodly hours in the morning, or drinking with his friends until he could barely even remember his name.
But he wouldn't get to do those things.
Straight out of the gates and Nekomata had already been pushing Kuroo to do something about Daichi, some "take him out when he least expects it" crap that had gotten to everyone's heads.
And soon enough Washijo was onboard, and of course with him came Ushijima, creating one of the more formidable duos that the business had ever seen.
At first Irihata held back, saying he'd ensure Seijoh's strength went to backing Karasuno up in case things got violent, but needless to say his mind changed on the day Ukai nearly killed Oikawa and - in the process - taken another cadet's life.
Takeyuki Yamiji was silent on the matter, only reassuring Ukai that Fukurodani would stay neutral when he was sure they were alone. "Bokuto gets too fired up," he'd said while sipping at a glass of bourbon. "He sets his mind to something, it gets done. And that can be dangerous."
Ukai didn't have a choice but to agree then, and by the time he'd returned home had smoked so many cigarettes his throat was barely capable of producing words.
What have I done? The never-ending question.
But Takeda was quick to reassure him, praising the work he'd done with Daichi and making sure he knew how well the entirety of Karasuno could handle themselves.
The next few months had been cautious, with Daichi starting to take over a majority of Ukai's duties for a gradual shift into the leader position.
And during those few months, Ukai had watched discreetly as Daichi fell - and fell hard - for Suga, the newly appointed second in command.
At first it had started with just a small blush whenever Koushi made eye contact and smiled, but then it had gone all the way to making a habit of pulling Suga into a hug whenever he got the chance just to feel close to him.
