   " Call me Mephisto. "

I only slept for two hours ; demons do not need lots of rest. Instead, I had decided to think about my day, and forgot time as I reflected, over and over again. It was a day marked with green eyes, purple hair and sharp ears and teeth.

At eight o'clock, sharp, I heard someone knock on the door. I stretched my arms, and stood up to open the door. To my not-so-great surprise, I found Mephisto leaning on the wooden wall, right in front of me. His umbrella, as pink as I had guessed in the dark that night, was rested against the wall behind him. He just cared that much about appearances.

- Ready for a tour, miss ?

- If I call you Mephisto, you call me Mei, I replied.

- Gladly, he smiled. Ready for a tour, Mei ?

- Like the sound of that ! But you're gonna have to wait until I've eaten something.

- I can buy you breakfast.

I stared at him for a second, wondering whether or not to accept. I did not know this man. Breakfast on the Academy's ground ?

- Sounds great, I finally answered. You lead the way.

The True Cross Academy campus was a small city within Tokyo, much more impressive than I had imagined to be. Some buildings rose so high, one could not see the top. It burgeoned with small shops, and its coloured streets appeared to be an actual maze. I immediately regretted not bringing a map of some kind with me. Mephisto led me through the flow of strangers, students and professors, even tourists ; everywhere he went, people smiled and took off their hat. I must say he was quite noticeable, both for his style and his manners. Pointing sometimes at this historical monument, sometimes at that popular shop, he overemphasised everything he explained. A metallic smell spread behind him, which skimmed over me.

- So... you're always like that ?

He turned around to look at me, half-curious, half-vexed.

- Like what ?

- I don't know, I shrugged. Gesticulating. Exaggerating.

- Yes !

He opened his eyes wide and grinned, revealing his two sharp canines. His eyes were mocking me, or maybe I was just touchy.

- Are you always like that ? he retorted.

- Like what ? I smirked.

- I don't know, he pretended while looking up. Sarcastic, ready with a quick answer ?

- You're gonna have to find out.

I opened my eyes wide, openly teasing, and walked passed him. I heard him giggle, and I could not suppress a chuckle, but refrained from looking back.

- You know, he continued and caught up with me, most of my students call me crazy, even scary. Quite like the mad hatter, in fact.

- And you're surprised ? I let out.

- Shameless, he pouted. I don't know what to answer to that.

- You don't always have to answer.

   I shrugged, but kept walking.

- Why would you care what people think anyway ?

- That's not the way I see it, he retorted.

- Yeah, we do, I winked at him. If you cared about what people thought, why would you dress like a clown ?

I looked him up and down with a knowing look, slightly sarcastic. He giggled quietly. Whatever he would have told me, I had already decided we were the same. In different ways...

- This tour is officially and unfortunately over ! I will send your uniform tomorrow, so that you have everything ready for Monday.

- Thanks... Mephisto, I added.

He stared at me without a word, leaning on the wall again. The clock was the only proof that time had passed. Same posture, same smirk, same playful eyes, same elfish ears. I felt like he could stay on this wall for centuries, and maybe I could even watch him.

After a moment, he stood upright and took a step forward ; we were still looking at each other.

- Sarcastic, he finally let out.

- Exaggerating, I answered.

I smiled at he left, disappearing in a pink whirlwing of smoke. It smelt like candy.
