15. Feel it

- What the Hell is that ?

   I shook my arms in the air, trying to dissipate the orange smoke that had just appeared. It was everywhere ; I could even feel it invading my lungs. 

   I heard Mephisto's voice somewhere on the right, but I could see nothing. 

- We found him, I suppose.

- Mephisto, where are you ? 

    No answer. I should have known that he would forget about me as soon as we found something. Too eager to fight and die, I sighed, frustrated. 

- Fine... Just don't be reckless, I frowned.

   I continued walking, stepping deeper into the smoke. It had suddenly appeared around us, and it only took a minute or two to blind us. Even Mephisto's conspicuous clothes were out of sight for me now. I grabbed my phone and called Nako, even though I knew it was no use. Well, at least I could tell her not to come.

- Hey, anything wrong ? I heard on the other end of the line.

- Yes. There's smoke everywhere, I lost Mephisto, I answered as a matter of fact. I'm afraid he'll do something really stupid.

- Wait, smoke ?! What are you telling me, Mei ? That's nonsense ! 

   I was perfectly calm, but Nako was panicking. I realised I should have listened to Mephisto on the topic of humans.

- Calm down, Nako. Everything's fine. I'm not in danger. I just need... 

   ... you to come here. Except I did not. That was too dangerous, and I could handle it myself.

- Just be careful, okay ? I'll try to find Mephisto. I'll let you know about everything. And above all else, do not tell Rin or let him come here, understand ?

- Mei, what's... 

   I hung up. The more I talked, the more the smoke smothered me. 

   I looked around me. I couldn't see anything. I sighed and closed my eyes. I could feel the smoke surrounding me. I knew it was mine too, somehow. A remnant from my past. I just had to focus on its movements and find Mephisto. I took a slow, deep breath.

    He was on my left. Moving quickly towards something. I did not hesitate and followed him as fast as I could. Keep your focus on the smoke.

- Don't run away like this ever again, I declared as I joined him.

   I was pissed at him. I knew that between the both of us, he was the demon King, but still. I had suddenly realised I had cared about him disappearing, and somehow I did not like the feeling. 

- Mei, how...

- Not now. There's someone else here.

- This someone else is who I was looking for, Mephisto sighed. But if you found me, I guess you could help me.

- That's strange, I didn't think you'd need my help after you left me in the middle of the smoke.

   I stressed the last words ; I wanted him to know. You don't disappear and leave me worried. Even if he was an incredible pain in the ass, most of the time. 

- I figured you wouldn't need me, he replied, giving me a glance.

   We had no time to argue, even though I wanted to. Arguing was for safe times ; this was not it. If we made it out alive, we would be able to argue for all eternity. If we made it out alive. 

   Use the smoke. I closed my eyes again, trying to find Lucifer. 

   And I did.
