A scream.
I opened my eyes wide and jumped out of my bed. Some part of me really wanted to jump right back in, but I stood my ground. Noise came from the restaurant ; I ran downstairs. Only in the restaurant did I thank myself for sleeping in my day's clothes. Pyjamas would have been embarrassing.
So there I was, my hair tangled, alert... staring at a terrified cook and two passed out waiters. Mephisto was dusting his cloak, hardly glancing at his surroundings. Behind him, Yukio was sitting, exasperated. I let out an accidental laugh, and Mephisto looked up at me. That's when I realised he must have been making a commotion for me to come down.
- But if it isn't Miss Ando !
I sighed. I had been trapped.
- But if it isn't Mr. Faust ! I retorted with a sarcastic smile.
I ignored his grin, and walked over to the waiters. I shook their shoulders a little.
- Don't worry, everything is fine. He is weird, but not that dangerous... Can you stand up ?
- How caring of you, Mephisto whispered in my ear as I stood up.
- How human of me, I whispered back.
I shivered. I had not seen him coming this close.
He shrugged, walked away and sat next to Yukio, who went back to his book, satisfied that nobody had died. I took a seat next to Mephisto, who did not react. He was good, but not enough for me not to notice the surprised flash in his eyes. I smiled inside, smirked on the outside.
I called a waitress – one that was still standing – and ordered breakfast ; so did Mephisto. I started regretting sitting so close to him, but I had to stand my ground.
- Mr. Okumura, what do you know about the latest disappearance ? He asked, coming to his senses.
- Young woman, nearly twenty-four, no family. One of her co-workers informed us of her disappearance. She had not gone to work for three days.
- So she disappeared when we got here ! I said ; I bit my tongue. Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt.
- No family, you said... Mephisto noticed. They are becoming more careful about who disappears.
- That's a possibility, Yukio replied. Yet, we found nothing for now. We don't have any more information.
- I will search, too.
I looked to Mephisto. Only then did I start to wonder why he had come all this way. Why did he suddenly want to take part ?
- Miss Ando and myself are going to search a fourth area today. Reduce your students' areas, so they can be more efficient.
- Wait, why me ? I sat straight, raising an eyebrow.
- I thought you could be useful, Mephisto lied.
He shot me a knowing look. I sighed. Friend or enemy ? I was still unsure of Mephisto's purpose. There were too many secrets between us for trust to settle.
I raised my hand when he opened his mouth to speak. He was going to tell me to follow him. I knew I had a long day ahead ; if he wanted to inflict that on me...
- Let me change first.
