Demons don't panic or waste their time in useless overreactions. That, however, does not mean they are suicidal.

- Mephisto, we should leave.

I glanced to my right at Mephisto on my right, and frowned. He was smirking.

- This smoke is blinding us, I insisted. There's no way we can win against him.

- That means you found him ?

I turned and stared at him, unable to understand him. He suddenly looked different ; as if the only thing that mattered anymore was the fight. I brutally understood that I would not be able to reason with him ; I was not looking at Mephisto, or Faust. I was looking at Samael. And there was no stopping him.

- Mephisto, I cannot fight, I resolutely declared.

- I can, he answered.

- Nope. You can't.

He turned away from the smoke for a second and turned to me. He gathered the little calm he had left, and asked :

- Where is he ?

I could feel the excitement behind his words, crawling under my skin.

- Mephisto...

- I don't need your permission. Where is he ?

- Right here.

I shivered. That was not my voice.

   Mephisto instantly stopped time.

Nothing was moving ; the streets fell strangely silent. I had never felt anything like this ; as if I was in a bubble, with Mephisto deciding when and whether to burst it. I watched him walk to Lucifer, observe him. For the King of Light, he seemed rather weak. Tired. Between life and death, fighting for one and against the other.

- You know, Mei, I always wondered what it feels like to be one of those souls that enter Gehenna everyday. Would it not be fun to try ?

I shook my head and turned my head back to Mephisto. Samael.

- You idiot. Is that really an option ?

He came closer and looked at me in the eye.

- You do consider it, I sighed. Reckless. I'm not staying here.

- When I'm done with him, you'll explain everything to me, won't you ?

He leaned closer and put his thumb to my cheek. I looked up at him, waiting. I wanted him to say he changed his mind ; but he put his lips to my forehead and turned away. I shuddered.

Next thing I remember, time was on again, and Mephisto was right behind Lucifer. The latter jumped aside, avoiding the punch. They were moving so quickly that I struggled to see them ; I understood each move seconds later, and it drove me crazy. I wanted to leave, run for dear life, but I could not turn my back on Mephisto. I started to feel sick.

- Why aren't you helping your friend, Mei ?

Lucifer was talking to me, still avoiding Mephisto's attacks. He did not fight back ; perhaps he did not have the strength to do it. I hoped so with all my heart ; but Mephisto was making no progress.

- He does not need it, I answered, observing Mephisto.

It was an act ; I would have been unable to help, had I even intended to. I glanced back at Lucifer.

- Do you mind if I kill him, then ?

I shivered. I was the one being attacked. He was trying to break through my mind.

- Try.

- Confident, are you ? Did you think my illness would restrict me ?

He sent Mephisto to the ground with a kick, without a look for him. Lucifer was still staring at me. His green eyes narrowed to spears ; when I looked down at Mephisto, standing up and coughing smoke, I felt a tear roll down my cheek. Lucifer laughed.

- I guess I'll have more fun than expected.
