Eternal Life ( Mephisto x Reader )

25. Heart

   Lucifer was nowhere to be seen, but Mephisto kept telling me the opposite. He was certain he had taken us to his brother. 

- I can feel his presence all around the place. He's near, he kept repeating.

   I sighed. What if it was another trick ? Where could Lucifer be ? Frustration was growing on me. I trusted Mephisto on his instincts, but I felt nothing. Void.  

   I closed my eyes for a second, pinching my nose. When I reopened them, Mephisto was on the ground. Woah. 

- What just happened ? I asked, confused and suddenly alert.

- He's invisible, he let out. Watch out. 

   Still void. I could focus all I want, Lucifer had not made the mistake of spreading smoke this time. I had nothing to hold on to. How could he even move without making any sound ? Was he more powerful than last time ?

   Another second, and I was on the ground too.

- That hurt, I commented with a wince. Where is he ?

- We won't know unless we see him.

   Brilliant, I sarcastically thought. 

- And how do we get to that ?

- You can control Light too, don't you ? Mephisto turned to me.

- You think I can reverse the setting ?

- I do.

- But we wouldn't even see ourselves ! Or other people, we're still inside the campus. And what about the fire ?

- Any better idea you'd like to share ?

- I'll try to reverse it, but I can't promise you anything.

- Just do your best, he winked at me.

   How could he be so confident and relaxed right now ? I closed my eyes. This time, I did not have to release Light. I must change it. I slowly exhaled.

   I opened my eyes. Everything was dark around us. Surprisingly, I could still see Mephisto and my own body. And now, we could both see Lucifer standing ahead of us. I had imagined him in great shape ; yet he was anything but. He held onto what looked like a cane, but made of light, his whole body visibly resting on it ; his eyes stared at us, half empty, half tired. He seemed weaker than ever.

- You, Mephisto declared with a glance in my direction, are amazing.

   He stood up and wiped his cloak. 

- Don't get carried away, I retorted. Now, we have to fight. Well, you do. I must stay focused on the Light.

- Mei... 

   I looked up. Lucifer's heart. I had never seen a demon's heart before.

- Fill me in, I asked Mephisto.

- He's fighting for real. 

   For real. Obviously. Heart is the greatest strength and weakness of a demon – ironically. Revealing it means releasing their whole power. Perks : supernatural strength. Drawbacks : hurt it, and they die. I opened my eyes wide.

- Mephisto, don't —

   Too late. He straightened up, revealing his heart too. I closed my eyes.
