13. Demons smile

   After Mephisto's dreadful discovery, we kept looking for other bodies. I sent a message to the other teams ; I thought combined efforts would help it. I could not just jump from place to place like Mephisto. He and I did not talk much ; there was not much to say. I was in deep thought, wondering why a demon would need life. But I rather pretended to ponder. I knew who it was, and Mephisto was aware of that. But this time, he did not insist on discovering where I got it from.

- So it's him, I said out loud. That's why you're here ?

- Why else ? Mephisto answered with a smirk. This is too dangerous for humans now.

- Why do we keep working on it ? I mean, the other exwires and me. Someone could get killed.

- You're quite right. But if I'm here, you could learn a lot, and there are very little risks.

- I doubt that.

   I glanced at him, waiting for his reaction. He looked straight ahead, giving away nothing.

- You're the one who knows so much about demons and Gehenna, you could at least trust me.

   He shot me a sidelong look. I guessed he would not let it go. I sighed and pinched my nose.

- I know Gehenna's hierarchy, Mephisto, I get that you're second... whatever that means. But he's first.

   No answer. I just kept walking. But by the end of the day, we had still found nothing.

- What if the other bodies have not reappeared ? 

   I did not want to consider it, but I had to say it.

- You mean what if there is nothing left of them ? Mephisto raised his eyebrows. 

- I didn't want to say it, I sighed. But yeah. It's late, we should go back to the hotel. My friends are gonna get worried. 

   We explained everyone what had happened. The reactions were varied ; Rin was angry, Nako horrified, Yukio seemed anxious. The others were obviously scared. Humans were great, up to the point where they were overwhelmed by emotions. I had to give Mephisto a point on that.

- Why is Mr. Faust here ? Shiemi finally asked.

   She seemed worried, but determined to get to the bottom of this. Take back part of what I said about humans.

- Let's say I wanted an update, Mephisto answered, with a convincing fake smile.

   He was definitely a talented liar.

    He nodded to Yukio, and the latter took over. He explained to us why we would have to be very careful, but I did not actually listen. I was thinking about Mephisto's words, the day before. " You are reacting just like humans do ". I still didn't know what to think about it. I had always lived with humans ; they had taught me how to behave, even if I sometimes ignored it. Mephisto, on the other hand, was the most demonic person I had ever met, and that was not always a compliment. He lied, sought only fun, played with other people. His life was dedicated to entertainment. I was not like that ; I did not want to be like that. My father was a demon, and I was never going to be like him.

- Miss Ando, are you even listening to me ?

   I blinked, realising Yukio was now talking to me.

- Yes, we have to be more careful.

   Yukio raised an eyebrow, and I could see Mephisto smirk behind him. His green eyes were sparkling with unknown joy. Had I suddenly become fun ? Please no. Interesting ? What was wrong with him ?

- Something wrong ? He asked as everybody left the room.

- Yes, you're weird. Wait, in fact, no. You always are. 

   He smiled. Not a smirk, an actual smile. I was taken aback. 

- Stop that, it's even worse.

- What ? You know I can smile, right ? Demons can do that.

- Demons can, but you can't.

- What do you think I am, if no demon ?

- A weirdo. 

   He stopped, looking outraged. I winked at him, laughing. I was the one having fun. This time, Mephisto was my source of entertainment.

- You know, maybe one day we could actually talk ? Like, without fighting, I suggested.

   He raised both his eyebrows and smiled again. I sighed, rolled my eyes. He was a weirdo, of course, but a handsome one.
