The first term of cram school had been surprisingly agreeable. Except for the few expected missions, I spent most of my time in class. I had no trouble figuring out who the second Okumura was ; his name was Rin, whom I soon noticed slept in class. I took the habit of sending him my notes, afraid he was not going to make it to third — and last — year. My free time was devoted to trips in Tokyo with Nako and Okumura number two, as I liked to call him. Our classmates would often join, and we formed a bunch of jolly fellows, strolling away from the Academy as soon as classes ended.
I looked through the window of my dorm ; it had been a long time since I had been truly alone. Snow fell on the True Cross Academy, and everything outside was white, from the gardens to the Headmaster's office. I was engrossed in my thoughts when someone knocked on the door.
- Come in, I answered distractedly.
Nako excitedly entered my room.
- Look what I found in Mephy Land !
I grimaced at the name. 'Mephy Land' was the theme park Mephisto had dedicated.. to himself. But when I saw Nako holding winter roses, I forgot all about it. She was the kind of caring person who always gave you a thought. And she was, I must say, quite restless.
- Nako, these are beautiful ! I exclaimed.
- I knew you'd love them, she winked at me.
I smiled and put them in a vase on my bedside table. All of Nako's flowers ended up there, for me to see in the morning.
- By the way ! I met Mr. Faust over there, Nako declared while pointing out Mephy Land through my window.
- What a surprise, I mocked him. And ?
- He wants to see us in his office tomorrow at 7 a.m. Don't you think it's a bit early ? she added.
- Not for demons, it's not. But why does he need to see us ?
My friend shrugged. Obviously, Mephisto had not bothered to explain. I could imagine him delivering his message, winking and vanishing in a cloud of pink malodorous smoke.
- Well, we'll go, I sighed. I have nothing else to do at 7, anyway.
- Agreed. Maybe it's another mission ?
- Yeah, maybe. You should tell the others.
Nako ran out of my room at once, and I was left to my questions. What was important enough for Mephisto to summon second-year exwires ?
