4. Burning eyes

After another boring sleepless night, Monday finally arrived. For want of a better alternative, I had admired the Academy all night. The lights all around me reflected the true nature of the place, a glimmer of hope in this dark world. A safe spot in the middle of demons and humans. I sometimes wondered which ones were the most dangerous...

Mephisto — or Mr. Faust, depending on my mood — having failed to send me another uniform, I decided to wear a black t-shirt, with black trousers, just to irritate him if I ever saw him. I even took my favourite necklace out again, a red inverted cross, to make sure I would be noticed. And I was.

- Hey you !

I turned around to see a black-haired girl coming towards me in the Academy's endless corridors.

- I love your outfit ! It matches your red hair perfectly !

- Thanks, I laughed. And you are ?

- Nako ! You ?

- Mei. You wouldn't happen to have seen Mr. Faust around, would you ?

- Nope, I don't even know what he looks like.

- Oh don't worry, you can't miss him !

The brunette raised her eyebrows, and after a brief look behind me, let out a small chuckle.

- Well, then I believe that's the one staring at you over there...

I abruptly turned around again. At the end of the huge corridor was standing the clown. Leaning over a wall, as usual, as if he couldn't stand by himself. He seemed quite upset. The blue flames of Gehenna were almost burning in his eyes... I smirked and waved at him. He frowned.

- You're a fast learner, aren't you ? I asked the girl.

- I guess, she giggled. So tell me, why is Mr. Faust so upset ?

- Long story. What about I tell you while we get to class ? I offered.

Nako nodded and I followed her through the maze we lived in, for she knew her way around better than I did. Heading to the cram school, she showed me how to use the enchanted keys to enter. The system was great : one could access the hidden classes from anywhere, on the condition of finding any lock. And remaining just a tiny bit discreet. It was not recommended to show it to any normal kid hereabouts.

There were seven other students in the classroom. Not a lot, would you think. But exorcism classes were not very popular among teenagers, or even well-known, for that matter. Most kids at the Academy studied normal subjects, looking for a normal job. The cram school was our little secret.

Nako and I had just found seats on the second row, when the teacher arrived. Mr. Okumura was, to my surprise, about our age, and although he seemed a little stiff, I eventually decided that he was nice enough for an exorcism teacher. I also remembered the Headmaster mentionning an Okumura, but I had believed him to be student.

First classes are and will always be about the upcoming year. Exams, minor missons, school's rules... as exwires, little was allowed in the actual field. Just like me, Nako was new here, but had had the brilliant idea to arrive a week earlier. Hence the good sense of direction. I learned later that she came from Kurisho, and that she had moved in in Tokyo to follow her mother. I had a whole other story...
