My name is Mei Ando. A few years ago, when I was 17, I considered there were two kinds of people : sheep, and eccentrics. I still do.

I was 17 when I entered the prestigious True Cross Academy. To all appearances, no parents, no friends, no boyfriend. The only things I took with me to Tokyo were books and clothes. In Osaka, I had learnt the basics of exorcism ; Tokyo was a whole new level. Bigger, better.

I arrived at the Academy during the night. Even now, it remains a beautiful place, if you imagine it under a starry night sky and in the most complete silence. Its buildings were illuminated, millions of little lights like so many lone stars.

I stepped out of the cab at four in the morning, exhausted. The air was warm, even if the sun was still resting ; it whistled up my dark sleeves and played in the auburn strands of hair I had desperately attempted to tame. In spite of my weariness, I tried to enjoy the last quiet moments of the night.

My gaze was soon drawn to a man, waiting by the giant door. Still standing on the small, clean bridge leading to the academy, I could only distinguish a white jacket, dark brown boots and stripped purple tights. Despite the dark and clear weather, he was holding a pink umbrella over his head. His face remained hidden in the shadows as I stepped closer, careful not to trip over the poorly-lit stairs.

- Welcome, I heard, to the True Cross Academy !

I raised my head, only to find him staring at me, eyes and arms open wide.

- I was expecting you, he added.

His light green eyes twinkled with excitement ; he bowed, and two neatly-done locks on each side of his face revealed purple hair. An eccentric, I thought, delighted. He amused me.

- I would have found the dorm myself, I commented.

- I'm sure you would have, he winked at me. But see, sleepless nights tend to get boring... wouldn't you agree ?

His playful smile exposed two sharp teeth. Sharp teeth. Sharp ears. I smiled back, and pulled a note out of my pocket. I glanced at it, then at the mysterious stranger in front of me.

- Second-years' dorm ? I asked.

- The cram school is over there.

He leaned over, spreading his arms : his way to say "After you".

   I passed through the gates.

- I'll take it you're Mr. Faust ? I added.

I looked back at the gate, but he was already ahead of me. A smirk lingered on his lips.

- Call me Mephisto.
