I turned around to leave, when Mephisto finally stood up. His eyes turned the colour of trouble, and I sighed. I loved being right, but this time was an exception. I glanced at Nako already stepping out the room, and wondered whether I should follow anyways.
- Mei, wait a minute.
- I'll wait for you in the dorm, don't worry, Nako smiled.
- Sure, I faked a smile and silently cursed. Thanks.
My friends left, closed the door behind them ; I was alone with Mephisto. Arrived early, departed late. I was shaking up my habits, and I had not yet decided whether I agreed to it.
- What do you want ? I questioned him.
- How about some manners, first ?
- Please go straight to the point ?
- Thank you, Mephisto grinned ; but his face soon darkened. It'll probably be more dangerous than I let your friends think.
- Are you sending us to the jaws of death ? I responded, smirking.
- I certainly don't hope so. However, you should be careful. I can't tell you more because of the Vatican, but...
He stopped, but his eyes stayed on me. Had he fallen silent for some compelling reason, or simply to annoy me ? The atmosphere started weighing down on me ; I guessed the former.
I frowned at him, both perplexed and vexed. Somehow, I had not expected him to respect the rules ; but more importantly, I had not expected him to respect the rules with me. I shook my head, my stupid unfunded thoughts in the process, and turned away.
- I see. Anyway, I'm going to investigate with everyone else, so...
I took a step back and grabbed the door's handle behind me. A waste of my time.
- Orange smoke, Mephisto let out.
I let go of the handle in a start.
- I beg your pardon ?
I turned around again, my curiosity piqued. He should've said that sooner.
- It is not officially related to the case, yet some orange smoke has been noticed in Kōtō.
- His orange smoke ? I frowned.
I immediately bit my tongue ; no answer. Oops.
- No problem. I'll be careful, I sighed and turned back to the door.
Please don't ask questions. I was highly documented on Gehenna, but that subject was never addressed in textbooks. I would have to find a tremendous excuse. So don't ask questions.
- How do you know about this detail, Mei ? Mephisto questioned.
Damn. I had never been lucky ; well, this was my fault for slipping.
- Underground chit-chat. Demons are talkative.
He squinted, but added nothing. As I left, I could only see one word in his eyes :
Liar.
