22. Things changed

I had to argue with Mephisto, but in the end, I managed to keep us out of Mepphyland. I sighed in relief knowing I would have to face only one version of him, and not the dozens of statues.  Instead, we went walking along the river. It felt strange to be here ; the last time we came there was on my first day at the Academy. Such a long time ago.

- I must admit that this place is more agreeable than my dark dorm, I declared.

- Isn't it ? It's been a long time since we came down here.

I looked up at him, wondering what he was thinking about. He caught my eyes, and took my hand. I let him, hardly hiding my surprise.

- Aren't you the one who accused me of being too human ? I smirked.

- That's not exclusively human, is it ?

- I have no idea, I admitted.

I had followed him outside so we could talk but, in fact, words turned out useless. I had my answer, and I realised I liked it. So I let go of fear and took a deep breath in. Somehow, the air tasted better.

- Everything seems so peaceful, after what happened in Kōtō, I sighed.

- You're right, it's as boring as it was before.

   I stared at him, amused.

- You could have fun without being suicidal, I suggested.

- Where's the fun if you don't risk anything ?

I stopped and let go of his hand. How much would he risk ? I wanted to know.

- Would you risk my life too ?

My question left him speechless. I regretted it, but I knew I was right to ask.

- Mephisto, would you ? I asked softly.

- Of course not, he finally whispered.

I could sense he was moved. Yet, I was not entirely reassured by his answer.

- Good.

- Why did you ask ?

- I wanted to know where your limits stand, I retorted. I was afraid your brother mattered more to you than anything, or anyone, else.

- Fighting Lucifer is just entertainment, Mei.

- But he's worth dying for, isn't he ?

- I don't know. Things changed since last time.

I decided to let it be.

- If you die, I'll follow you to Gehenna anyway. You wouldn't even be able to get rid of me, I teased him and took his hand back.

- That wouldn't be so bad, he smirked.

- You don't know me, do you ? I smirked back.

- I do know you. You would never hurt me, he declared, leaning over me.

He kissed me, on the lips this time, and I decided I would forget his belligerent behaviour. I gave in ; he tasted like magic. And he was mine.
