Jackson and I set out to figure out how to proceed with the whole process of getting my nieces. It was Alexi's recommendation that we check out a lawyer he knew personally. He would not reveal how he knew the lawyer, just that the lawyer was really good at his job. I knew Alexi could be trusted as he was a good friend to me, so we made an appointment to meet with the lawyer. His assistant said he was free for a meeting tonight around five if we were free to meet up. Once I checked with Jackson to see if he was available, I made the appointment. It did not feel good to think that I may find myself going against my sister, plus my parents as well. The money my parents had and their own personal attorney allowed them to participate in a long and expensive battle. I was financially flexible, in fact, I saved most of the money I made outside of paying my bills, so it was also not impossible for me to fight this long battle. The money I got from Maddox was outstanding on top of the money I received from private patients before the accident. Since Maddox's money was literally the proceeds of crime, I didn't report my earnings as a matter of ethics. However, it is estimated that to date I have made close to a half-million dollars.
After checking my bank account and savings, I realized I had around a quarter-million dollars I could comfortably lose without worrying about it. Jackson had gone to ask Maddox to watch Rosie well we were gone. He had of course agreed but not before wanting to know what we were up to. I had no doubts that Jackson had filled him in on the whole deal because here Jackson and I were sitting at the table staring at the black credit card.
"Why did he give this to you?"
"I don't know. He just took the card out of his wallet and handed it to me and told me to let Alexi know the payments would be taken from the money we set aside for lawyers and other legal expenses."
"I have more than enough I set aside I could afford the lawyer."
"I also have a few extra bucks."
"I'm not comfortable with him giving this to us."
"You think I am? I don't even have a black card and I have a few zeros in my own bank account."
"Take it back. Tell him we can cover it."
"He won't take it. I tried."
"Of course he wouldn't."
After thinking over what was said, I finally spoke finding myself wanting to know what if Jackson had the money, he didn't have a fancy sports car.
"How come you don't have a sports car? If you have the money."
"Same reason you don't, even though you also clearly have the money. It's just not useful or practical."
"Yeah. I didn't buy one because I didn't feel the need to show off the cash I was making."
"That's smart, considering who pays you."
I chuckled at that and let out a deep breath. Possibly, one day, for no other reason than to say I own one, I will acquire one. But I highly doubted it.
Checking my watch I had a few hours to check on the couple of people I had appointments with today. One of those people was Maddox himself. I doubted that this would be about him and more about me this time. Heading down to my office I sat in my chair and checked a few things before It was about time for Maddox. The door was open which meant he was safe to come in. I have had an open-door policy lately. He sat on the couch and nodded at me before he spoke.
"Hey. How are you doing?"
Getting up I closed the door and sat in the other chair.
"I'm doing pretty alright. Thanks for asking."
"No problem."
"What do you want to talk about today? We can talk about anything, as usual, Maddox."
"Alright. Let's talk about how things are going with Emerson and I having a son now."
"Ok, Good choice."
"Emerson and I are doing really well with our son. He's growing incredibly fast. It's amazing to see how fast he grows. I think I will miss when he's not a small baby anymore."
"That's pretty normal. I think it is safe to say all parents go through the same thing you are."
"I honestly still have a hard time believe Emerson and I created that sweet little creature. Some nights when he wakes up and gets fussy I just hold him and watch him. That's weird to say I think."
"That's not weird. You never planned it. Both of you were unaware he was ever-present until he was born. You weren't prepared."
"I really did not expect to be a father, but I wouldn't give it up now for anything. I would love another child, but I don't want to put Emerson back in the same position as before. He was so depressed after he gave birth to our little one. He is the thing I care about the first before a new baby."
"The love you have for Emerson is evident."
"Yeah, it is. Any day of the week, I would take a bullet for that boy."
I didn't doubt that for a single second. Maddox cared so much for Emerson it was clear for everyone to see.
"On the matter of babies, Jackson told me about your nieces, Zev."
'Yeah, I'm absolutely terrified.
"Of what? You're a capable and responsible person."
"However, you know I don't have experience with children."
"You have Jackson, He would bend over backwards to help you. You also have Em and me as well, we aren't seasoned parents but I'm sure we could be helpful."
"I'm thankful for both of you."
After Maddox's appointment, which seemed more like a chat about us both. I bumped into Creed in the hallway.
"You're exactly who I've been looking for, you skipped your morning workout"
I felt a sigh come from deep within myself. This morning I skipped out on the workout since I wanted to sleep in and I did just that.
"Yeah, I am guilty of doing that."
No worries, Jackson told me that you were sleeping in this morning. It was just the regular morning run."
"Honestly, I just needed a sleeping-in day. I'll be there tomorrow morning."
"Perfect. I'll see you then."
