Shawn's POV

"C'mon man, just give it a try... it's been 7 months since Y/N," Brian pleads.

"Fine. One date," I say giving in. I stand up with a sigh.

As much as I didn't want to, he was right; it's been a while since I'd dated. It took me a long time to get over her, and I don't even know if I am yet. But I suppose I should at least try to get back out there.

"This girl is totally your type, I promise."

He follows me into the kitchen and I grab us both beers out of the fridge.

"Yeah, whatever. Just text me the time and place."

"So Brian told me you're a singer?" she says, trying once again to make conversation.

"Yeah. I sing," I reply bluntly.

This date... well it wasn't going great. And that was entirely my fault. There wasn't anything wrong with her I guess, but I really wasn't feeling it tonight. I just wanted this to end.

Typically, I suppose she would be my 'type'. Brian knew me well enough to know these things but I didn't feel remotely attracted to her.

Honestly, I was surprised she hadn't given up already. I wasn't making any effort whatsoever to get to know her, but I didn't see the point because this date wasn't going anywhere.

After leaving the restaurant, she invited me back to her place. I politely declined, and then finally said goodbye for the night.

I drove back to my apartment, where Brian was waiting to hear how the night went. I groaned, collapsing on the couch as soon as I walked in.

"Date didn't go well?" he asks, sitting next to me. A soccer game was playing on the TV in the background.

"Nope." I sit up to face him, a frown on my face.

"What went wrong?"

"Nothing really. We had dinner, talked a bit. It's just... " I trail off, biting my lip.

"She's not Y/N," he finishes, already knowing what I was going to say.

I nod, looking down. "Sorry."

"Don't worry about it. Did you tell her you weren't interested?"

I shake my head. "No... I thought she'd have taken a hint but she invited me to her place when we left the restaurant."

He bursts out laughing. "So you just declined her?"

"Pretty much," I respond with a chuckle, running my fingers through my hair. No matter how great of a girl he set me up with, it wouldn't have made a difference.

We sit in silence for a few minutes. He was watching the game, but I was staring blankly at the screen, lost in my own thoughts.

"Brian?"

"Yeah?"

"I miss her."

He looks at me sympathetically, hitting pause on the remote.

"Have you told her that?"

"No. I've barely spoken to her since we broke up. She probably hates me."

"Well you'll never know unless you talk to her. So you either keep going with this dating thing, stay single for the rest of your life, or tell her how you feel."

I nod. "When did you get so wise?" I say jokingly.

"That's what I've been telling you this whole time; I'm a genius," he replies with a cocky grin.

I smile, then I get up and go to my room so I could think.

The truth is, she broke me. After we split up, I didn't know how to function anymore. It took me months to pick myself up again. I was heartbroken and disoriented, like a lost puppy.

After a while, it was as if I even was convincing myself I was over her. Whenever someone asked, I'd say I had completely moved on. In reality I thought that if I said it enough times, it would eventually become true.

I didn't know where she stood at this point. Did she hate me? Was she still mad at me? Had she moved on?

With all these questions flying around my head, I knew one thing for sure. I wanted her back.

Maybe I was just setting myself up for heartbreak again. But, even after how badly things went last time, somehow it didn't seem like the worst thing anymore.

Only then did I realize; I was willing to risk anything for the possibility of getting her back. I was a fool for ever letting her go.
