Y/N's POV

I feel Shawn jump a little beside me, causing me to wake up. It was the middle of the night and I now realize that he was still awake. The rain was pouring down, hitting loudly against our window.

"Shawn?" I say sleepily. His back was turned to me, and I couldn't see his face.

I hear a soft sniffle and no response.

"Baby?" I ask again. I sit up more and turn towards him so I could see his face.

He was clutching the blanket tightly, his eyes were puffy with tears in them, and his shoulders were caved inwards. He looked so scared.

"Shawn, what's wrong?" I place a gentle hand on his shoulder and he seems to relax a little at my touch.

A flash of lightning lights up the room for a second, followed by a loud rumble of thunder. He jumps again at the noise, tensing up and squeezing his eyes shut.

I press a kiss to his temple. He turns over in the bed and I wrap my arms around him. He cuddles into my torso and I stroke his hair gently.

"I'm sorry for waking you up," he whispers.

"Oh baby, it's okay."

We lay in silence for a few minutes as my hand moves through his hair or up and down his back. He holds me tighter when the thunder comes back.

"Let me go get you a glass of water," I say after a while, beginning to stand up and be released from his grasp.

"No, don't go," he pleads softly.

"I'll be back in just a moment, I promise."

He lets go of me and I head downstairs. While I'm in the kitchen, I hear another rumble of thunder. I quickly finish up and hurry back to Shawn.

I return to the bedroom with a glass of water and Leo the lion. I figured he'd get some comfort from the stuffed animal.

When I return, he pulls me back into his arms, and takes Leo. He wasn't crying anymore, but I didn't think he'd be able to sleep with the storm. Luckily, it seemed to be fading slowly.

"Don't leave again, okay?" he whispers.

"I'm right here baby," I assure him.

"Can we talk about something?" he asks quietly after a while.

"Of course, like what?"

He shrugs. "Anything. Just to keep me distracted."

"Okay... have you written any new songs lately?"

A small smile forms on his lips. "Yeah, I have. There's one I really like that I wanna show you."

"Yeah? I'm sure it's really good."

"I haven't quite figured out the bridge yet, but I love the chorus and the instrumentals are coming together."

Shawn continues to tell me about a bunch of his new songs, some that I've heard and others that I haven't yet.

He was so excited talking about his music, and a lot more at ease.

After a while, we are both rendered in a comfortable silence. Silence?

"Do you hear that?" I ask him.

"No..."

"Exactly."

He smiles. The storm had faded some time during our conversation and neither of us had noticed.

I kiss him softly.

"Thank you," he whispers gratefully, and I know from the look in his eyes that he truly means it.

Just then, his stomach grumbles loudly. I giggle.

"Seems like there's another thunderstorm in there. You hungry?"

"Maybe a little," he laughs.

I take his hand and we both head downstairs for a snack. I look at the clock and it was almost 2 AM.

I tell Shawn to sit down at the table that was next to the kitchen while I made us both a snack.

He was chewing on his lip, seeming to be deep in thought as he gazed in my direction, watching me move around the kitchen.

I bring the two plates over to the table, and he takes his from me.

"Thanks, babe."

I smile, and then sit down next to him at the table. We eat in silence for a moment, when he puts down his food and finishes chewing.

"You uh, you probably wanna know what happened back there..."

I put down my food as well. "Oh, Shawn, you don't have to explain..."

He smiles. "I do want to tell you, and I think you should know that there's a reason why."

I nod. "Okay..."

"When I was four, my mum took me to the park. It was kinda cloudy that day so we were the only ones there. It started raining and in a minute it was pouring down really hard. It also got really dark all of a sudden.

"We began to leave the park in a hurry, when we saw a flash of lightning in the sky. A couple minutes later, a bolt of lightning hit a tree that was just in front of us."

He fidgets nervously, and then takes a breath before continuing.

"My mom screamed, and I started crying. The tree was in flames for a moment and then it just turned to ash. It was so scary, especially as a toddler. Just a few metres from that spot and it would've hit us."

I reach for his hand and raise it to my lips, planting a kiss on the back of it. I hold onto it, resting our connected hands on the table.

My eyes meet his hazel ones. "I'm here for you always, you know that don't you?" I tell him.

He nods with a small smile.

"Should we go to bed now?" I ask him.

"One more thing first."

He stands up, letting go of my hand to tuck in his chair. He then takes my hand back in his, and pulls me up from my seat.

Shawn brings me over to the piano in our living room and sits me down on one side of the bench. He takes a seat on the other side.

His fingers gently press down on the black and white keys as he plays a few chords.

"I wonder, if I'm being real, do I speak my truth or do I filter how I feel...."

I'm in awe by this new song. I glance up at him and he's smiling proudly while singing and playing the piano.

He begins the second verse, skipping a small part where the lyrics weren't finished yet.

"I wonder, when I cry into my hands I'm conditioned to feel like it makes me less of a man..."

I place a soft hand on his shoulder, enjoying the melodic sound of his voice. He finishes off the song with a final chord.

I clap excitedly as he takes his hands off the keys and turns to me. Shawn grins at my reaction.

"You like it?"

"I love it! It's absolutely amazing, Shawn."

He yawns tiredly. "Okay, I think it's time for bed now."

I giggle. "Yep. 3 AM is way too late for old man Shawn."

Shawn laughs, nodding in agreement. He places an arm around my shoulder, leading me upstairs.

We both fell asleep almost immediately.
