Joe stood in complete shock for a moment.

Remy. Remy? The Remy Café. No, he was dead. He was dead, right?

But... Joe passed through them when he was skating, didn't he? They both had tails for legs at one point. If he really looked, he could see through them ever so slightly- they were both transparent.

...Joe was talking to ghosts.

"Woah, woah, woah, woah- but- how?! You're dead!"

"Sure am."

"Then how am I- so you are a ghost... Remy Café? How does that even-"

"Mm, nope. Pronounced Cafe."

Joe blinked. "...Huh?"

"Cafe, not Café. There's none of that little weird-ass dash above the e."

Why was he acting so calm about this? "...Cafe?"

"Yep. Like, Caf-hard E. Caf-E."

"So you're... b-but you're still Remy Cafe, you're literally dead, what does-"

"Ah, nope, still wrong. I got married to this wonderful man standing next to me," Remy grabbed Emile's arm and pulled him closer to him, "my last name is Picani now. Remy Picani. I am not the same person I used to be, kid. But- ...why am I even talking to you? No, nu-uh, none of this matters. Don't bother telling your parents you saw a ghost, especially not that it was me. Patton would have a fucking heart attack."

"How do you know my dad's name?!"

"I killed his brother. I thought they were teaching this shit in schools now? Janus? That ring a bell, huh?"

"...Right. But- no, wait, while you're here, they also told me that you dated someone he was related to in highschool, so like, who was-"

"I'm not telling you that because news flash, everyone," Remy briefly glanced upwards, "I'm not coming back in to this fucking story. I'm done and I've been done since I died. It's called a grand exit for a reason. So I'm just gonna turn around now, and Emile, if you would so graciously come home with me that would be amazing."

Emile sighed, looking between the two. "...Sorry, Joe."

The two ghosts began to turn around, but Joe stepped forward again.

"W-Wait, please... please. I'm very confused right now, I've been learning about you in school and I think you have some bigger relationship to my parents but when I tried to mention you they ignored me, and-"

"Sucks to suck, kid, but that's life," Remy turned back around, grinning sarcastically. "That's your parents. They aren't gonna tell you shit, and neither am I."

"Well, hold on, don't be mean to the poor thing!" Emile frowned. "Look, Joe, we want to help you out-"

"We sure as hell do not."

"-...but we just can't. Please trust me when I say most of it, you don't want to know."

"But I do! Uh- today's my birthday, actually, does that sway you at all? Please, I at least want to know if you know why I can see you guys."

"Well, happy birthday, but I don't think we know why that is."

"I mean- Remy even has the same birthday as my father, actually, that's just weird. Honestly, he kind of looks like him, too, now that I think about it."

"Wait, which one's your father?"

"Uh... Logan?"

"EW, I do not look like- wait, I share a birthday with that asshole? That's just sickening."

"We don't know why that is either, Joe."

"Okay- Emile? Can we please leave? Now?!"

Emile looked back at his apparent husband and sighed once more. "Look... I'm really sorry, Joe. Just- forget this happened, okay? Go home, trust your parents. They're trying to keep you safe, and that's what we're doing, too."

"But..."

But the two were already walking away. Joe stood and watched them fade out of sight, and after a while he blinked to himself, before looking down at the sidewalk and the skateboard that had been flipped over next to him.

"...Now I'm even more confused," Joe mumbled to himself. "Why can I see ghosts..? Maybe I really do have a concussion. But how would a concussion make me able to see... how oddly specific that interaction was?"

Joe sat down, looking at his skateboard and at the ground. His eyes traveled to his knees, where there seemed to be a bruise forming, so he tried to pull down his pant leg over it so his parents wouldn't know he fell and hit his head on the same day.

...Guess he should just go home. What else could he possibly do?

Joe got back on his skateboard and silently rode all the way back to his house. When he got there, he took a deep breath and plastered a fake smile on his face, because if his parents could do it, then so could he.

"Oh- Joe! How was your little skateboarding adventure?"

"It was cool," Joe said. "It's fun, thank you for it."

"Of course, kiddo. Anything interesting happen?"

Joe blinked. Should he tell them?

...

"...Uh, nope. I saw a bird, though. That was nice."

No, he shouldn't.
