:(Cut back to when Logan and Patton went out the back door).
•~~~~•
It was silent outside.
Logan and Patton were both seated underneath a tree behind their house- a familiar tree, the same one they had sat under almost two decades ago when Patton's brother had very unfortunately been stabbed in the side of the neck. It was hard to believe that it had happened eighteen entire years ago, but it was true.
And this situation was, in a way, similar to that, because in both of them, something had died. But this time it wasn't a human- it was half of Logan's sanity.
"...Remember when I buried that knife here a decade or two ago?" Patton suddenly asked, looking down into his lap. Logan wrapped an arm around him.
"Yes, I do. I know we were both surprised when it actually grew into a small bush but that is a bit off-topic for this-"
"No, no, I meant- er... I was gonna ask if you remember what you told me that night."
"Oh. Well... I remember it was something I wish I could have told myself in highschool."
Patton took his husband's hand in his own. "You told me that sometimes, things just happen, and we don't have any control over them, but that's okay. I guess you were more saying you would try to never leave my side then, but I think that first bit applies now."
Logan looked down at Patton, and Patton looked back up at him. That day had been a very long time ago, as had everything else- many things had changed. They had gotten older. They were in their mid-forties now, they had wrinkles on their forehead and strands of gray hair here and there on their head. But their love for each other had never changed- Logan still fell more and more in love with his husband every day.
And, Logan kept his promise- he had never left Patton's side and he had no intention on ever doing so. He was beautiful, he was perfect. And in that moment, that was the only thing keeping him from getting overly upset at the situation at hand.
"Hmm..."
"I know you're mad, and so am I. But Joe's kind of right... he's dead. Maybe... we can get through it."
Logan sighed. "If I'm being honest, which I am, it's not him being my half-brother that is bothering me the most."
"What is it, then?"
"I'm- ...do you believe Joe can hear us?"
The two of them looked behind each other. Joe wasn't in the living room anymore by now, he had likely gone upstairs.
"I don't think so... but maybe just use the codes to be safe."
When Joe had come into their lives, Logan and Patton realized they had to talk about their past with each other around him a lot more than they had expected they would have to, especially when trying to teach Joe right and wrong and the names of his relatives and apparently how the ones that were dead had died. It was merely a precaution, and perhaps some day Joe could know some of the word's meanings, but it was unlikely he would ever know them all. He did not need to know everything about his parents.
Logan sighed. "Well... I'm experiencing a bit of a code yellow, then. Which is not fun. It's been years since I've thought like that."
"Who is it towards?"
"Weed, of course, it's all her fault, isn't it?"
"I guess if I was in your situation I would be thinking like that, too... but it's been decades since you've thought like that, right? So maybe it's not all that bad. You... you don't think you'd actually go through with it though, right? It's not gonna turn into a code black?"
"Oh, goodness, no," Logan shook his head- he was completely sure about that. "I left that in highschool. I'm sure it'll pass... I'm just very angry at her. Root didn't deserve the treatment he got from her when they were married. I didn't deserve it, either, and her being the driving force of him leaving was one of the reasons I felt I had to go water so much in bell. Besides you, of course, but that's not your fault at all."
"Then... can we call it a code purple instead?"
Logan chuckled, pulling his husband a bit closer to him. "Why do we have a code for requiring comfort?"
"Why do we have a code green?" Patton rephrased. Logan blushed.
"I- because we can't talk about doing that in front of our son, that is why. Code purple is only wanting affection. Code green is... more than that."
Patton giggled, mildly blushing too, and leaned his head on Logan's shoulder. They sat in silence for a bit.
...Thinking about it, this was the first time Logan was having these thoughts towards this person, which was surprising, considering how much pain she had caused him since the very day he was born. But Remy was dead already... and for once, this wasn't his fault. Well, no, it actually was- he could have swam a little slower nine months before Logan's mother gave birth. And then maybe Logan could have a normal half-brother.
"...I hope Shade is in hell, and I hope he never got to see Car again," Logan mumbled.
"I know, Lo. You probably don't have to speak in codes anymore, though, if Joe went upstairs we're probably okay."
"He could be sitting on the roof beneath his window like he does."
"Oh, right."
"I don't believe I need to repeat myself either way, though."
"That's true."
Logan leaned down and kissed his husband's lips for a short moment, Patton humming in content as they parted. "Should we go upstairs ourself, Pat?"
"Are you feeling better?"
"Yes... I believe I am. You seem to be very oddly calm about this, though, dear- how are you?"
Patton sighed. "As I said before, it's scary for me, too. But I really don't think we have to worry 'bout it too much, right? Even if that man was alive, which he's not, this wouldn't be an issue... right?"
The question hung in the air for a moment, and the two stared at each other, taking slow breaths as the moonlight reflected off their confused faces.
"...I'm not sure."
