"You guys ready for science?"

Joe stood outside his friends' classroom door as they both exited it, Joe tapping his feet with mild excitement. He wasn't in a class with his friends seventh period, Joe had math alone. But his friends' English class was right next door to his math room. It was nice, they could meet up in the hallway outside and walk to science together.

"Yeah, I am!" Oliver grinned. "I hope I get a good partner. Some of the girls in our class are weird."

"You think you'll get a girl?" Joe asked as the three of them began walking.

"I thought she might pair us up by gender, because, y'know, heteronormative world. Florida."

"Ah, yeah."

Sage groaned. "I hope you're wrong, because I wanted to be with one of you. But that's a slim chance anyway. I just wanna go to history, honestly."

"Are you not excited for science? What?" Joe frowned.

"Eh. DNA has never been my thing. At least in history I can learn more about that one Jeffery Dahmer guy my pop's brother is constantly talking about. DNA is fun, but we've learned it like three times at this point. It's just not that fun anymore."

"No! It's literally so fun, shut up- you can use it to figure out what your kids would look like, what generations before you might have come out as, and then there's pedigrees, which are really cool, and-"

Sage groaned. "Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you wanna info-dump about genetics then wait until we're not walking to class, you stupid future DNA stealer."

"DNA stealer? Do you want me to steal your spit or something?"

"I bet you couldn't if you tried."

Oliver laughed. "Ew, you guys are gross."

They made it to their classroom and sat down in their usual seats, a bit spread out from each other but not too badly. The teacher walked in right as the bell rang.

"Good afternoon, everyone! I hope you all had a good day today, it's almost the end of the day, so I'm sure you're all a bit tired, but we're just going to jump right into it," she began. "Since I'm sure you all are anxious for it, I'm going to be reading off your partners first. I've go ahead and put you all in partners of two, one girl and one boy in each."

The entire class groaned. Joe looked around the room- ugh, he didn't know anything about any of the girls in this class. That was bad. Maybe he could still enjoy this project anyway.

"Alright... Gabby and Justin, Jewel and Ryan, Cassandra and Kristopher, Oliver and Joe, Edison and-"

Joe blinked. He was with Oliver? He was with Oliver! Wait... he was with Oliver? He raised his hand.

"Yes, Joe?"

"I thought we were being paired up girl and boy-wise?"

"Yes, you are."

"...My partner is also a boy, though?"

The teacher sighed. "Yes, he is, but this project is more focusing on... biological gender rather than what he wants to be, okay?"

...Uh?

Well that sounded pretty transphobic, didn't it? Joe furrowed his eyebrows and looked across the room at Oliver, who shot him a look that read it's fine, at least we're partners.

Right. They were partners, at the very least.

...

Wait, Joe was seriously going to be doing a science project with his crush? One that was going to last a month or two, at the very least?!

"...And, that should be everyone. You all may quickly move and go sit next to your partners, whatever seats you choose will be your new seats until the end of the project, so likely until November or December."

Damn... nice.

Oliver stood up and walked over to a seat that happened to be open next to Joe. He smiled at him.

"Oliver, may I take out all my rage concerning your mother on our dear science teacher?" Joe whispered.

"It's fine, Joe, at least we're partners, right?"

"Yeah, I know... I'm just sick of half the people who go to this school. They all either treat the queer kids like space aliens or like we're some toy for them to push around."

"Florida is like that," Oliver frowned. "But it's okay. We've gotten through it so far, right?"

"...Right."

Oliver was right. At least they were partners. Joe glanced around the room at everyone, seeing Sage stuck in the corner with some heterosexual girl Joe didn't recognize that well. Sage looked back at Joe, at Oliver, then at Joe again. He smirked and wiggled his eyebrows.

Joe rolled his eyes and looked back to the front of the room. At least he was with Oliver, and thank goodness Sage was far enough away that he could ship them in silence without Oliver noticing.
