A/N: back in my PLL era. Someone requested this like 3 years ago lol. AU where Veronica and Peter are Alex and Spencer's bio parents and they grew up together.

Spencer and Alexandra Hastings were and had always been inseparable. They were completely identical in appearance but had very different personalities, and in any other world they wouldn't have gotten along. But, since the day they were born they knew they had a built in best friend in each other, and no matter what they'd always have each other's backs, even if they didn't like the others music taste, or clothing choices, or even friends.

Alex had always been a little in Spencer's shadow, her twin sister was older (only by a couple of minutes) and although Alex was smart and well-liked, her twin was smarter and more popular. Alex had realised young that people often mistook her for Spencer at first, but no one ever mistook Spencer for her, it was Spencer and Alexandra, not Alexandra and Spencer, for a reason. Still, she had a lot of admiration for her twin.

Spencer was a good sister; she would make friends easily, but always make sure Alex was included, she noticed when her sister got cut off, and asked her to finish what she was saying, she didn't mind that Alex wanted to be like her and do what she did when they were little, but still encouraged her to find her own hobbies.

It was through this encouragement that Alex learnt that although she was smart, she preferred using her hands. She'd known since she was a toddler that she had a knack for building things. Legos and wooden blocks would be stacked high before her sister would take one for her own tower, making Alex's creations tumble down. Spencer would always apologise and tell her sister she didn't mean to do it, and Alex forgave her every time, how could she not? Her sister was her best friend.

Sophomore year of Rosewood High changed a lot of things for the twins. Spencer became friends with Alison DiLaurentis and suddenly her whole life revolved around her new friends, Emily Fields, Aria Montgomery and Hanna Marin.

Alex didn't mind too much, she knew that no matter what, she and Spencer would always be best friends. That's not to say she didn't make friends of her own, she did, people she liked because they didn't care about how she dressed, which was a lot more black and edgy than her sister's patterned preppy wardrobe, and let her talk about the more niche interests she had. Her friends liked that having Alex around meant Alison wasn't as horrible to them as she'd been before, as if having Spencer's face meant that Ali drew a line that even she didn't often cross.

The best friend Alex made at in Sophomore year was in her Woodshop class. Although she was a Sophomore, she was allowed to take the class usually meant for Juniors, as she'd shown promise with previous projects (and a little because her Dad was friends with the Principal).

Her first day in shop was nerve-wracking, Alex was by no means shy, but she did like to be able to hide, fade into the background, listen. She liked that people would let things slip if she was quiet, like if she didn't talk much it meant she didn't listen either.

But she did listen, and knew a lot more about a lot of people than anyone expected her to. It was her little secret. Well, hers and Spencer's. Alex couldn't resist telling her sister everything she overheard, as long as Spencer didn't go and tell Alison.

Alex walked in and sat herself down towards the back of the class, trying not to be seen too much. Juniors filtered in and took their places, and before long Alex was sharing a desk with a guy she'd seen around but didn't really know. He smiled at her and said "Hey! I know you, you're friends with Emily Fields, I've seen you on our street before."

Classic. Alex had explained this so many times before she had a script. "Oh, that wasn't me, you must've seen my sister, Spencer. I'm Alex." she said.

The guy smiled and Alex found herself warming to him immediately. His smile was kind and friendly. "Of course! The Hastings twins. Sorry for mixing you up, I'm Toby." he introduced and Alex realised that she did know who he was, she was pretty sure his mom had died a couple years back.
