They had been the most picture perfect couple anyone had known. Met in high school, stayed together through college, married at 22, first kid by 24, second by 26.

Now, at 29, Spencer and Toby were getting divorced.

No one had expected it, they'd always seemed so perfect together. So fiercely in love that they were determined that nothing and no one would ever cause them to be apart. But there's the thing. Marriage is HARD.

Spending so much time with someone, no matter how much you love them, means they're always going to annoy you somehow.

Then there was their schedules. Spencer was a successful lawyer so had long hours, business trips, full days in court whilst Toby was now a Detective in the Rosewood PD so also worked long and unpredictable hours.

On top on this they also had 2 young children to look after and by the time that was dealt with there wasn't enough time in the day for Spencer and Toby to be alone together.

They'd only had sex once in the last 2 months and that had been because it was Toby's birthday and Spencer's parents had agreed to take the kids. God, she missed the days when it was rare for them to go 2 days without it.

They were both stressed and taking it out on each other. Both of them had been working high profile cases and with Toby being called to a serial murder in Philly and Spencer having to defend the murderer, everything had been very tense in the Cavanaugh house.

Seeing each other in court, on opposing sides had broken both their hearts although they were both too stubborn to admit it.

They would've gone to a marriage counsellor but they simply did not have the time.

Toby knew it wasn't working and Spencer did too so they sat down and discussed it. They reasoned that they had sadly, after 10 years, just fallen out of love and it would be best for the kids to split their time between their parents, ironically they'd probably see more of them than they did now when they lived in the same house.

So they decided to separate. At first it was okay. Spencer got a nanny, Toby got a cute little apartment downtown with enough room for the kids. They both still worked but were able to get more time off now that the kids had to travel to see their dad. Both of them thought it was kinda nice to have their own space back.

After 3 weeks though, the novelty wore off and both Spencer and Toby began to seriously pine for each other. Toby hated not being in the house with his babies, he hated not being able to cuddle up to his wife in bed, he hated coming home to a dark and empty apartment.

Spencer was struggling with the kids who constantly asked for their father, especially their 5 year old daughter Annie who was very much a daddies girl.

She and Toby has always been good cop bad cop. She'd been the one who'd forced them to eat their veggies, didn't let them have ice cream on school nights or go to McDonalds and Toby had been the one who'd take them for secret ice cream after school (which he'd always eventually confess to Spencer about), tell them they could go to McDonalds if they were good at school and let them go to bed past their bedtime. Spencer desperately missed him.

To make matters worse Spencer had been so stressed recently that she'd begun throwing up before work in the mornings and her period had stopped. She thought she was hiding it pretty well until one day at work her phone chimed. She knew who it was before she even checked it, she had a specific text tone for him.

1 Message from: Tobes
"Hey, meant to text you earlier but Charlie won't settle today, I think he misses you. Annie said last night that she heard you throwing up yesterday? Are you sick? If so I can take the kids for a few extra days or I can come back with them and look after you."

Spencer's heart melted. He was always such a sweetheart. She texted back
"Hi, I miss him too. And Annie. I don't think I'm sick-I think it's a stress thing it only happens in the morning. You can bring the kids back tomorrow, don't worry."

A minute later her phone chimed again
"Sickness in the morning... Where have I seen you have that before?"

Spencer's gut twisted. Oh shit. The missing period, the morning sickness, the fact that she hadn't been eating much but still gaining weight. How could she have been so stupid??

She thought back desperately to Toby's birthday. They'd had a few drinks at the restaurant they'd been to and she couldn't for the life of her remember if they'd used protection.

She took a deep breath and replied
"Fuck. You could be right."

Toby responded immediately
"I'll bring a test over when I bring the kids back."

So that's how Spencer and Toby Cavanaugh ended up standing in the bathroom of what used to be their family home just over 24 hours after that conversation, holding a positive pregnancy test.

"Fuck. Shit. What the hell are we supposed to do now?" Spencer asked aloud.

"Not. A. Clue." Toby responded. This shitty situation had just got a whooolllleee lot worse.

"Do we keep it?" asked Spencer, looking Toby properly in the eyes for the first time since they spilt.

"It's your body Spencer. But I want to keep it." Toby said firmly. This could be his chance to have his family back for good.

"Yeah. Me too." Said Spencer.

Toby shuffled awkwardly from foot to foot, trying to come up with the right way to say what needed to be said.

"Look Spence. I know this isn't an ideal situation but I can't help but feel like this was meant to happen. I jus- I miss you. A lot. I miss the kids. I miss being a family."

Spencer's eyes filled with tears. "Yeah. Me too."  she whispered.

"So what now?" Toby asked.

"I think we can work this out, work us out." Spencer said. "I'll be going on maternity leave and we still have a nanny."

Toby moved closer to her and took her hands in his. "That's all I wanted to hear you say for a very long time. That and what I should've reminded you every single day."

"And what's that?" Spencer asked.

"I." Toby leaned in and kissed her lips gently, their first kiss in almost 2 months.

"Love" Kiss.

"You" Kiss.

Spencer smiled, her first real, genuine smile in a very long time. "I love you too. So damn much and I should've fought harder for you."

"So should I." whispered Toby.

And just like that, their family was back together. They were back together and within days it was like they'd never been apart, never even drifted.

But funnily enough, it wasn't until 7 months later, when Amber Cavanaugh was born that their family finally felt complete.

Yeah, they were complete.
