12 • I Say Go (5x08)

Originally the idea of him becoming a cop seemed kinda ridiculous. After all, what had the cops of Rosewood EVER done for them. What with Garrett, Wilden, Holbrook and now Tanner, the cops had never been on the girls' side.

They'd been arrested multiple times, been accused of pretty much everything from obstruction of justice and underage drinking to murder and never received so much as an apology.

So when Toby stood in his girlfriend's kitchen and told her he was becoming a cop she honestly didn't believe him.

Now it made more sense, and not just because his hair looked better short or that the uniform was (maybe a little) a turn on, but because after almost being kicked to death by an aggravated horse, Spencer was willing to do anything if it meant she never had to feel that way again.

She had very few people in the world who really cared about her and the one who cared the most was Toby. If she ever lost him to this or if God forbid something happened to her, neither of them would know how to go on.

But now they were sitting in her living room and her eye looked so sore and God, all he wanted to do was protect her.

Their conversation wasn't easy but it was necessary. 

She'd told him about the horse attack and his heart broke. More than anything in the world, Toby hated seeing Spencer hurt.

"I'm so tired of feeling like this" he said.

She was sitting on her couch, still trying to stop the pain in her eye.

Her heart leapt into her mouth at his words. Oh shit, was he about to break up with her??

"Feeling like what?" Spencer asked nervously.

Toby paused.

"Powerless." he whispered.

Spencer's heart broke. She knew that Toby was fiercely protective of her. He would go to the ends of the Earth to make sure she was safe and she hated the fact that A made him feel like he wasn't enough. Not enough to protect her or look after her or keep her safe.

"That's what I wanted to call and tell you." Spencer said, fighting back tears.

"What? That you're lucky you didn't get trampled?" Toby wasn't annoyed exactly. The right word would be frustrated. Obviously not with Spencer but with the fact that he tried everything he could to protect her and none of it was enough.

"To tell you that I'm sorry." Spencer answered.

Now it was Toby's heart that leapt into his mouth. If she was about to suggest that they shouldn't be together any more he didn't know what he would do. He couldn't lose her.

Toby walked over and knelt in front of her

"What are you talking about?" He asked carefully.

"If you becoming a cop is going to put an end to this I say go, study hard, graduate early." Spencer had stopped fighting the tears and was just letting them flow now.

She paused, trying to gather her thoughts and emotions before continuing "Because coming back to this house, with my parents split up and Melissa being a part of this."

She stopped, becoming overwhelmed at how much things were falling apart.

She looked up, straight into the stunning blue eyes that she found comfort in every time.

"I jus-" She started before stopping again. This time really breaking down, tears flowing down her cheeks, finally releasing all the pent up anger and hurt she was feeling.

"It's getting so much worse" She finished in a whisper.

Toby, still kneeling in front of her took the cloth she was using to soothe her eye and put their heads together, closing his eyes.

"I promise Spence, I will. I need to. I can't see you like this anymore. I can't see A continue to break you down when you've already been through so much. I'm going to protect you no matter what. God Spence, I love you so much."

Spencer wrapped her arms around him and laughed despite the situation and all the pain, both emotional and physical, she was in.

She gently moved his hand away and pulled him closer so they were in a tight embrace.

She moved her mouth closer to his ear and whispered:

"I wanted to say that first."
