There are so many things you don't consider when getting into a relationship, small, seemingly insignificant things that don't seem to matter when you're that attracted to someone but matter a whole lot once you actually start dating them.

Like love languages. More specifically, if your love languages match up with your partner's. Toby and Spencer's didn't match up whatsoever.

Toby's way of showing his love was through physical touch and words of affirmation. Spencer's, on the other hand, was through acts of service and giving gifts. The two overlapped in only one place and that was quality time, they always tried their best to see each other whenever they could and make the most out of the hours they were together.

Apart from that, often signs of affection between the two were lost in translation, mostly because while Toby understood and accepted that Spencer chose to show her affection differently, she didn't feel the same way. Especially when it came to physical affection.

To put it simply: Spencer HATED it. She didn't enjoy hugs, she found it suffocating to have someone else's arm around her, hand holding felt weird and kissing seemed pointless unless it was building up to sex. Of course, she did kiss Toby- or rather Toby kissed her first. Little pecks in the morning when he dropped her off at school, kisses on her forehead as he left her house to go home, kisses on her cheeks when she was concentrating on something and just looked adorable. Toby wouldn't stop himself then and he knew Spencer would tolerate that.

But it didn't go the other way. Spencer showed her affection in her own way, like when she bought his truck for him, when she helped him with French or the fact she never let him drive her to school without first buying him coffee in the morning.

It was hard sometimes to connect with each other when it felt like they were on a two way street going different ways.

That was until Spencer suddenly wasn't as uncomfortable with physical affection anymore.

It was about 4 months after she'd started dating Toby and Spencer had had the worst day. She'd woken up late, forgotten her English homework so Fitz gave her a detention, got a B instead of an A on her Chemistry quiz, argued with Hanna at lunch over going to Noel Kahn's party on Friday, had a surprise Algebra quiz she wasn't prepared for then got a text from her mom that she would be home alone tonight and would have to cook for herself. Then Aria bailed on being her ride home, leaving Spencer to walk which ended with her being caught in a sudden heavy rainfall.  Bottom line: Spencer was not in a good mood.

She checked the time: 4:00. She didn't know if Toby would be home yet but his loft was far closer than her house and she wanted a shower, dry clothes and a ride back to her house, all things Toby could provide her with.

She trudged through town, making her way to the fire escape outside The Brew and climbed up the stairs, praying Toby was home. She knocked on the door harshly and waited a few seconds. 'Great.' she thought. 'No reply. Guess I'm walking home.'

She went to turn around and head back down the stairs when suddenly the door opened, revealing her extremely good looking boyfriend who also happened to be shirtless.

"Oh- hey beautiful." Toby said, surprised to see her. "Sorry, I was about to shower. You okay?" he asked, taking in her dishevelled appearance.

That's all it took for Spencer to break and tears began to fall down her cheeks. Toby's face fell and he began to reach for her.

He didn't even need to bother, because a second later Spencer threw herself into his arms and cried into his chest.

Toby was shocked to say the least, he had no idea why she was even here, let alone crying and she had never ever initiated any type of physical touch so this, this was so weirdly out of character he wouldn't be surprised if she had a secret identical twin this whole time (A/N: lol).
