6 • What Could've Happened (7x10)

This was written before the reveal of Alex being the one Toby kissed in 7x10 so for the purpose of this one shot, we're collectively pretending it was Spencer.

"Can I kiss you?

Just one last time?

To say goodbye."

The words rang in the air and Toby took a while to process them.

He half nodded, knowing this was wrong but wanting it so much that his need overshadowed all conscience.

Spencer stepped towards him slowly, suddenly hyper-aware of what she was doing.

She leaned up gently and their lips touched.

Spencer's brain was tuned out by her heart and all at once the pair felt the sparks running through their veins, the chemistry in their blood was stronger than it had ever been and it was almost as though after the two of them had been apart they were finally whole again.

As they began to draw apart Toby pulled Spencer back into the kiss.

It was almost as though neither of them really registered what was going on anymore, both of their brains too clouded with passion and romance and lust but most powerfully, love.

Spencer put her arms around his neck, one thing he'd always loved her doing when they dated.

Spencer's brain suddenly flicked back into action and she realised what she was doing.

She pulled away, almost horrified that she'd kissed another women's fiancé.

"Stop, Toby we can't." She said, it broke her to say it, she wanted, no, needed him so much.

Toby looked at her the only way he knew how, with love.

"Please Spence. I need this, I need you."

"I know, I need you too but not while you're with her. It's not right."

Toby groaned. "Why do you have to be so moral?"

Spencer smiled and looked into his eyes, gently stroking his hair.

As she stared she realised how perfect he was.

He wasn't horny like Caleb or desperate like Marco.

He was just Toby, handsome, kind and loving.

A huge wave of nostalgia hit Spencer and she came to the conclusion that she needed Toby more than she needed oxygen or water and she seriously didn't care that Toby was with Yvonne.

She pulled herself closer to Toby, surprising him but making him smile anyway.

She leaned up towards his ear and gently kissed his neck, causing a moan to be released from his mouth.

She hissed in his ear "Actually, do you know what? I don't care about your perky little girlfriend. I know you want me even more than when we were 16 Cavanaugh."

"Always and forever I do, I promise." Replied Toby, in more of a moan than speech.

Spencer pulled herself as close to him as she could and started grinding against him, Toby smiled, loving the side of Spencer he hadn't been able to see in so long.

Their lips connected again and Toby ran his tongue along Spencer's lips, begging for entrance which she gladly granted.

It was Toby who broke the kiss. "God I missed this, I missed you." He told her.

"I missed you too." Spencer replied, looking deep into his stormy blue eyes.

For far too long now it had been Toby's secret that he had never been in love with Yvonne, she had been a coping strategy from losing Spencer, he knew Spencer had his heart forever.

He smiled as grabbed her hand and led her into the house they both knew really belonged to her.

It was Spencer and Toby in their own little bubble forever.

And they knew, in that moment, it would always be that way...

4 MONTHS LATER

Spencer laughed as she put down the last box of her things in the living room of the house she and Toby now shared.

She had looked different since getting back with him, the bangs were gone, her style wasn't as dark as it had been and her beautiful smile was a lot less rare to see now.

She smiled contentedly, looking down at her hand which had a stunning diamond ring with a gold band displayed on it.

She took it off, turning it so she could see the words engraved on the inside:

"My safe place to land. Always.
~T"

His words would be there for the rest of her life.

And that meant everything to her.

She heard a noise behind her and before she could turn around she felt a pair a muscular arms snake around her waist.

She felt a kiss be planted on her head and Toby's voice say "Are you okay?"

She replied with "Better than okay... Happy, I'm finally happy."

And the 2 of them stood there, knowing that no more words needed to be exchanged.

They'd never know what would've happened if Toby had left and Spencer had gone.

Just what could've happened.
