I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAS CHANGED FROM THE SIXTH YEAR. The things that James used to do which annoyed me so much don't anymore. I had grown to find them... charming. I guess I found James irritating because I was friends with Severus and he bullied Severus. But now that I'm not friends with him anymore, James isn't so bad.
"So just ask him out," Dorcas sighed. For a moment I thought she could read my thoughts, but she was talking to Marlene.
"I can't," Marlene complains, stabbing her bacon with her fork "I doubt he knows I exist, let alone like me."
"Help me out here Lil," Dorcas said, using her nickname for me. I chalked it up to Dorcas laziness. My name was already short enough to be a nickname.
"What happened?" I asked. Dorcas groaned. I guess I should not have said that.
"Marlene has a new crush," Dorcas explained. What? It was literally the second day of school and Marlene was already crushing on someone. New record.
"You make it sound so bad," Marlene pouted.
"Who is it?" I asked, resting my chin on the palm of my hand.
"Sirius Black," Marlene and Dorcas said at the same time. Only, Marlene said it with a dreamy tone and Dorcas said it with a little bit of frustration.
"Seriously? Sirius Black?" I asked in disbelief "As in James Potter's best friend?"
"Speaking of Potter," Marlene said, wiggling her eyebrows "How are things?"
"What do you mean?" I said. I could feel the blood rushing to my cheeks.
"Oh come on!" Dorcas exclaimed "You are Head Girl and he is Head Boy and you have to share a dorm. In most romance novels the main characters are forced to stay together and then they fall in love. So who knows what might happen."
"Shut up!" I groaned, lightly shoving her arm. Dorcas and Marlene gave each other a look and went back to their food. The three of us headed to class after the golden plates disappeared. I sat at the very back. James sat down next to me.
"You know this place must be an airport because I can see my heart taking off," he said.
"Well then you better go catch it," I retorted with a smile "Because I doubt it will survive the lack of air pressure at the height of your stupidity." Marlene and Dorcas laughed.
"Hey Sirius," Marlene said, twirling a strand of her hair around her finger.
"Hi Marlene," Sirius replied, turning bright red "Umm... crazy weather in the... um... great hall?"
"Yeah, hot- I mean crazy," Marlene said. I tried very hard not to laugh. Dorcas rolled her eyes. Professor Slughorn stepped into the class and that was the end of Sirius and Marlene's... I want to call it a flirting session but it was too much of an epic failure to call it that.
"Good Morning class," Professor Slughorn said cheerfully. He got a mixture of cheerful good mornings and a few grumbles. Professor Slughorn continued teaching. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Peter hand something to James. It was a small round marble. James did some spell on it and threw it across the room. Everyone's attention turned towards it. It suddenly splits into two and then four, and then eight. James and Peter started flinging some other marbles and they do the same thing. Soon the floor is covered with marbles. Everyone started screaming and running out of the room.
"Wait, come back- I haven't- oh curse these marbles- who threw them?" Professor Slughorn shouted over the ruckus. A piece of paper slipped out of Pettigrew's bag. Professor Slughorn caught it.
"Detention, Mr. Pettigrew," he said. I headed out with Dorcus and Marlene and ran into James and his crew.
"So everyone has detention today except for James?" Remus asked.
"Nope, I got detention this morning," James said.
"How?" Dorcas asked, mildly interested "Wait, never mind, who gave you detention?"
"The Bloody Baron," James said shrugging.
"I don't think the Bloody Baron can give detention," I said, puzzled.
"He can't?" James asked and I shook my head "I've got seventeen detentions because of that git!"
"I'm Head Girl I can give you detention," I said calmly. Marlene, Dorcas and I headed to class and James and his gang went in the other direction. Wonder what they were up to.
**********
I knocked over my bottle of ink and it stained the bedsheets. I tried to magic it away when I was startled by a knock on my door.
"Come in," I said. The knob turned and James walked in.
"Hey can I talk to you for a minute?" he asked, leaning against the doorframe.
"Sure, what's the matter?"
"Um... what does McKinnon think of Sirius?" asked James.
"Marlene? I didn't even know that he knew she existed," I said. Maybe that was a bit too mean.
"Are you kidding?" James scoffed "Were you not there for the crazy-weather flirting bit, if you can even call it that."
"I thought the same thing!"
"Soulmates do think alike."
"Don't flatter yourself," I said, rolling my eyes "So Sirius likes Marlene."
"And does Marlene like Sirius?" James asked and I nodded. Sirius barged into the room. I guess James told him the password.
"Prongs we got to go Mo- Hey! Lily!" he cut himself off when he noticed me in the room.
"Hey Sirius," I said "Who's Prongs?"
"Me," James said, raising his hand.
"Okay," I said "Oh, James don't you think Sirius and Marlene would make an amazing couple?"
"YOU TOLD HER!" Sirius yelled.
"Didn't need to," I said "It was pretty obvious from the weird potions flirting bit." Sirius turned bright red.
"James we got to go," Sirius said with a tone of urgency.
"Where are you going?" I asked. Sirius and James looked at each other and then back at me.
"Library," they both said at the same time.
"The library?" I asked, raising an eyebrow "You? And library?"
"Hey these good grades have to come from somewhere," James said shrugging. I was about to say something but both of them dashed out of the room. I know I shouldn't have but I followed them. What were they hiding?
