TWENTY MINUTES IS ALL IT TAKES TO BE TOO LATE. I was just twenty minutes late and Lily was already going with Moony. I didn't want to be alone in my dorm so I went to the Gryffindor Boys' dormitory. Padfoot was wallowing in his misery on his bed.

"No, that is completely and totally unacceptable," I said "I'm having a bad day and both of us can't have a bad day at the same time."

"Yeah, well then, you go have a good day because my problem is more important than your Lilt problem," Padfoot said "Marlene is going with Pettigrew." Padfoot was really cross with Peter because he just called him 'Pettigrew' instead of Wormtail.

"Lily is going with Remus," I said. I was angry at Moony too, but not enough to call him 'Lupin'. I'm sure he had a... reasonable explanation. I hope.

"Speak of the devil," Padfoot said as Remus and Peter walked in.

"How could you do that to me?" Padfoot and I said at the same time.

"Do what?" Remus and Peter said.

"You know what you did," I said.

"Really James," Remus said, "First of all Lily asked me. And I only agreed because she wants to sort out her feelings for you."

"Really?" I said, perking up "She said that? Those were her actual words? She actually said that she needs to sort out her feelings for me?"

"Yes," Moony said, slightly annoyed "Are we good now?"

"Yeah, sorry," I said.

"And you convinced me to say yes," Peter said.

"Why would I do that?" Padfoot yelled.

"Ask that to the bottles of Chocolate liqueur you drank," I answered.

"I can say no to Marlene if you want," Wormtail said.

"No, it's all right," Padfoot said, a little sadly "You should go with her. Who knows if you'll actually be able to find a date or not?"

"Hurtful mate," Wormtail said "Besides, it isn't a requirement to show up with a date."

"Let it go Wormtail, there are plenty of girl who would go with you," Moony said "Provided that you find them."

"Haha, vey funny," Wormtail rolled his eyes and went somewhere.

"Where are you going?" I asked.

"Away from you," he hollered back.

I don't think I've had a better idea than this. Lily said she needed to figure things out between us (according to Remus). If that is true then some part of her fancies me. I just have to nudge her. And who better to do that than one of her best friends.

"Hey, Dorcas," I whispered during Charms. She sits right in front of me.

"What?" she whispered back, without turning around.

"Will you be my date for the Ministry Ball?" I asked.

"Go ask Lily," she replied "Oh, wait, you already did that."

"Very funny," I said "Please! We can go as friends?"

"Why me?" she said, turning around "Aren't there thousands of other girls who would love to go with you?"

"Yeah but none of them are Lily's best friend," I said "Just please say yes. I just need to pick your brain about Lily."

"Fine whatever," she mumbled.

"Hey, at least you could act excited," I said "You don't how many girls would love to go with me?" Dorcas rolled her eyes and turned away from me. "I just have one favor."

"What?" Dorcas sighed.

"Under no circumstances are you allowed to fall in love with me," I said. Dorcas laughed.

"Won't be a problem," she said.

"You say that now but you don't know," I said "You haven't seen me use the James charm."

"You used it on Lily for seven years and she still doesn't love you," Dorcas pointed out "I think I'll be safe too."

**********

Moony stormed in to my dorm room. I think it was a pattern because Wormtail stormed in shortly after Padfoot did. Padfoot was still upset about Marlene and Peter just got water-ballooned by Peeves. We should have never taught Peeves to throw water balloons. Before that he would just sneak up behind students and scare them.

"Will you all please knock it off?" I grumbled "I'm trying to do some homework."

"Since when do you do homework?" Padfoot asked.

"How do you think I pass the classes," I said.

"I don't know, maybe you just annoy the professors so much that they don't want you here for more time than they actually need to," Wormtail remarked.

"They would just expel me, idiot," I said.

"Hi! Hello, it's my turn to complain now so all of you listen to me," Moony said "Prongs, if you want to go with Lily, you can-"

"Mate, I already told you. It's fine," I said "And plus I asked Dorcas Meadows today."

"Even you have a date!?" Padfoot exclaimed.

"No, let me finish," Moony complained "You can go with Lily because I'm not going."

"What? No, Moony you have to go, you just have to," Wormtail said.

"I can't," Moony said "It's a full moon. The night of the Ministry gala is a full moon."

"We'll handle it," I said "We always do. Besides, if you don't show up what are you going to tell Lily?"

"Also do you really want to miss the whole Ministry gala? Especially after what Prongs and Wormtail found out about it?" Padfoot added. Moony just sighed. I didn't stay to finish the conversation but it was three hours past curfew and even if Minnie didn't catch me, Lily would. I was able to sneak into the Head's dorm without anyone noticing. Lily was still awake and she was sobbing softly.

"Hey what's wrong?" I asked. Lily turned to face me. Her face was stained with tears and her eyes looked puffy.

"How do you always know?" she said sniffling. I sat down next to her and she put her head on my shoulder and started crying.

"It's okay, it's okay," I said, stroking her hair "I'll get you some tea and then tell me what's wrong okay?" She sniffed and nodded. I took my invisibility cloak and went down to the kitchens and got a tea pot filled with chamomile tea and two cups and I made my way back to my dorm.

"Now, tell me what's wrong?" I asked.

"It's my parents," she replied.
