THREE MONTHS AGO I WAS WORRYING ABOUT MY PARENTS AND NOW I WAS GETTING READY FOR A STUPID MINISTRY PARTY. Marlene and Dorcas picked out the perfect dress for me. It was simple yet elegant and purple in color. The Ministry arranged for us to arrive using the floo network. Marlene, Dorcas, Remus, Peter, James, Sirius, and I decided to meet in the Head's dorm so that we all could go together.
The Head's dorm had a fireplace just barely big enough to fit one person at a time. We all gathered around the fireplace. Marlene was pacing back and forth.
"Where the hell is he?" she complained. She was getting more agitated by the second.
"Relax he'll show up," I said "And I know you get confused from time to time but your date is here." All of us laughed except for Marlene. Sirius rolled in after a few minutes and a blond girl. She was wearing a navy blue dress with diamond jewelry.
"What the hell took you so long?" Marlene said.
"That's my fault," the girl said "I couldn't find my other shoe."
"Everyone this is Olivia," Sirius said, introducing her.
"Dor. Is this the same Olivia that-" I whispered to Dorcas
"Yep," Dorcas said cutting me off. I smiled and gave Olivia a small wave. Marlene and Olivia used to be friends before I was. They both got into a big fight about something and their friendship imploded.
"Well, now that we all are here let's go," Marlene said. She took a fist full of floor powder and stepped into the fireplace.
"The Ministry of Magic," she said. She burst into green flames and then she was gone. Peter went next and Dorcas, James, Remus, and Olivia followed.
"Did you ask her just to spite Marlene?" I asked Sirius.
"No of course not!" he exclaimed "I asked her to spite Regulus. He had a thing for her. It's just a bonus that it spites Marlene." He repeated the same sequence as the rest and arrived at the Ministry of Magic. I followed soon. This was my second time traveling using floo powder. The first time was when I visited Dorcas one summer.
The Ministry halls were dimly lit by a few floating candles that led a path to the venue.
"Shall we?" Remus asked.
"All right," I said, looping my arm through his. The Ministry hall where this event was taking place was not that much differently decorated. It was illuminated by floating candles. For an event made exclusively for seventh-year Hogwarts students, it was hard to find any around. Many Ministry Wizards and witches were roaming around, mingling with students. There were a few Aurors around as well. Near the back of the room, there was a display of all the Ministry's great achievements of the years, along with many of the famous witches and wizards. Soft music played in the background and the smell of small finger food lingered in the air.
We all talked for a while and then decided to at least talk to some people around here. I went with Remus and took a look around the 'Ministry's wall of fame'. The others decided to talk to the other guests.
"So, any plans after Hogwarts?" Remus asked.
"I don't know," I admitted "I might be one of the boring Ministry witches wasting their life away in a department doing meaningless work. No offense to anyone who works here."
"I get what you mean," Remus said "The Ministry has a great face but it's useless. It won't do anything until the threat is imminent. By then it might be too late."
"What about you?" I asked, "What will you do?"
"Probably the same as you," he admitted "Although you know James is really wealthy. If you marry him, you might not have to work a day in your life."
"At least I'll probably have a rich husband," I said "I can't say the same for you." Remus jokingly gasped, placing his hand over his heart.
"Oh, that's just me-" Remus didn't get to finish his sentence. The floating candles blew out and the room plunged into darkness. The lights came back on after a while. An ear-piercing scream broke the silence. We all turned towards the origin of the scream and found that there was a girl in a purple dress pinned up, four feet above the ground, against the east wall, dead. The words 'Filthy Mudblood' was written around her in blood. I looked for James in the crowd. I found him a few feet away, looking at me, with concern.
There were a few murmurs then the murmurs escalated into screams of panic. Remus and I made our way to the others. After wrestling our way through panicked people, we found James and I held his hand.
"Who is it?" I asked. No one knew.
"Excuse me," Minister of Magic, Minchum said "I want everyone to stop where they are and take a few deep breaths and just calm down. Aurors, I want the perimeter secured, no one in or out." I felt James stiffen at the sound of that. Remus, Sirius, and Peter looked at each other.
"Others, if you can identify the fallen or have any information or idea of how this went down, please inform me or any of the Aurors. There is a logical explanation for this and we will bring this dark wizard or witch and bring them to justice." Everyone did as they were told.
"We'll be right back, don't follow us," James said. He let go of my hand and disappeared into the crowd along with Sirius, Remus, and Peter. We spotted Olivia a few feet away from us with a different group of students.
No one said anything. Dorcas, Marlene, and I decided to overhear a few conversations of the Aurors to try and piece together what might have happened.
"We got a name for our victim," an Auror said. He was a tall man with a pale face and dark brown hair. "Karen Smith."
"This is definitely the work of some Death Eaters," his partner said.
"If that is true, it means that the Dark Lord has infiltrated the Ministry."
