Chapter 18

Chace holds the door open for Rylie as they exit the police station.  Neither expected this is how they would spend their Saturday afternoon.

Rylie is full of pent-up anger she rushes out the door walking hurriedly ahead of him in the opposite direction of the parking lot.  Chace follows catching up to her.

"Where the hell are you going?"  He stands in front of her stopping her from walking forward.

Pushing her finger into his chest she exclaims. "To get away from you."  Fixing him with a warning stare she walks around him down the sidewalk.

"Rylie.....I didn't know they would do that?"  He reaches out to touch her arm she shrugs away from his touch.

"Oh get away from me, you had to know they would threaten me to get to my sister.  I don't know anything beyond what I told you.  I don't know what she's planning or where she's hiding.  I know nothing about this Quinton person or the people she's involved with.  Monique and I are not that close.  I was trying to protect her from herself.  She always gets caught up....in...in."  Rylie starts to hyperventilate trying to catch her breath.  Chace slides his arm around her waists helping her walk to his car as her breathing subsides to normal.

After managing to get her into it he runs around to the other side getting in.  "I'm sorry....?"  He says rubbing his fingers across his temple.  Rylie has her body turned toward the window still upset she doesn't want to face him.

"Ry, all they want you to do is to convince her to come in so they can talk to her.  They don't believe you had anything to do with this.  They want her to testify against Quinton, it's the only option she has."   Chace reaches across the seat cupping her chin turning her to face him.   "You need to get her to do this it's for her own good."  He chides her.

"You're missing it and so is everybody else."  Rylie moves his hand away.  "Monique doesn't listen to me, she never has."  Rylie huffs at him.

The glare on his face makes his eyes darker.  Rylie tries not to get captured in them cutting her eyes away from him.  He grasps both her arms forcing her to look at him.  "You are going to convince her to come in and do what they want to get you and her out of this mess.  I'll help you find her we can get this guy off the street.  I had no idea he was blackmailing so many of our clients."  He lets her go raking his fingers through his hair.

"Now you're concerned?"  Rylie raises her voice.  "You don't want to lose clients out of this so you want my sister to put her life in danger because of it?"

"That's a low blow and uncalled for.  When are you going to get it through that thick scalp of yours that your sister put you, me, Jayson and Braxton Holdings which I might add you are barely working for in jeopardy with this debacle of hers?"  Rylie can sense his annoyance as he starts the car.

"Don't threaten me with my job again Chace.  I do it well and I've been covering for your brother for the last two months without hearing any complaints about it from you.   Quit holding it over my head that you're going to fire me.  If you want to fire me then do it and get it over with otherwise leave me alone about it.  This isn't about my job."  Rylie is shaking by the time she's done standing up to him.

The car is started and one hand is gripping the steering wheel.  He narrows his eyes at her, his dark long lashes are to be envied.  She stares back afraid but trying to withstand his intimidating gaze.  His nostrils are flared in anger he grunts at her.  Whipping out of the parking lot he's speeding past the driving limit down the street.
