Chapter 52

Someone taps on the driver's side car window of the rental car trying to see if the person inside not moving is alright. Mason stirs in his sleep, waking up and stifling a yell when his stiff body starts to cramp up over the way he was sleeping.

Turning on the ignition he rolls his window telling the couple out early in the morning walking their dog he's fine but he's really not. He didn't intend to fall asleep in the rental car he actually picked up for Monique to drive once he got her out.

His vexation over her relationship with Chace Braxton has gotten out of control he realizes. He fell asleep in a damn car waiting to see if Rylie was going to come by to talk to her sister after Jayson and his wife left.

He knew the moment he saw Rylie again at their favorite grocery store that he had made the biggest mistake of his life. He was so focused on making partner at his law firm and now that he's made it, the social expectations that come with the job he has to perform are proving something he really dislikes. He misses the life he had with Rylie by his side. He doesn't want to think about her being pregnant with Chace's baby but the way she kept turning away from him not looking him in the face when she felt ill, that has to be it.

His phone rings, sitting up in the car he stretches his body. Picking it up to see who the caller is, it's Sharna he ignores it letting it go to his voicemail. He has aspirations of being a Senator himself, he thought the night he met Aiden and Sharna Layton was an opportune moment. Instead he's finding out things about them he should have checked into from the beginning. He spent a lot of time last night thinking about his relationship with Sharna and how she actually has been using him to find out about Rylie. It was foolish of him to sleep with her, he fell so easily for her stories of how humiliated she still is over Chace dumping her so many years ago.

She told him she only married Aiden to get back at Chace and piss off her father. She said her father still doesn't like Aiden although she's pushed Aiden and used every favor she has to get him to be a Senator. It's not enough for her father, he still criticizes her for not being woman enough to hold on to and marry Chace Braxton. "Now this tramp has her clutches in Chace" he remembers hearing Sharna say. Mason rubs his fingers across his eyes at the thoughts he's having. That comment alone from Sharna should have sent up red flags in his mind but it didn't, he let his greed get in the way.

His conversations with Monique have revealed a side of the Senator he never knew or expected. He understands now that Sharna and the Senator have both been playing him. He's the perfect patsy for their schemes as an attorney that can represent Monique Cameron. They both knew he was once engaged to Rylie Cameron and that she is now in a relationship with Chace Braxton. Everything fits all too neatly for them to control.

Mason's phone rings again, this time it's the Senator calling he still doesn't answer it. He rips his loosened tie from around his neck before he strangles himself with it. Laying his head on the steering wheel rolling it from side to side in frustration he tries to contain the anger he feels over being such a fool.

As Mason drives himself home his mind keeps wondering back to why Gavin would attack him and he can only think it's because of his relationship with Rylie. He told Rylie several times Gavin was obsessed with her she always dismissed it. He didn't know what Gavin was doing or why he was in the hospital that night but he knew he surprised Gavin. He didn't want to be seen, he must have been working for the Senator that night. The Senator was using Gavin to keep an eye on Monique maybe he sent him to that hospital to do her harm.

Making the turn coming down the block to his home he spots a black SUV sitting some distance from his house. He recognizes it right away as one of the Senator's. Mason turns up into a neighbor's driveway then turns around going in the opposite direction.
