After Kevin completed summer school, Kevin went to the ninth grade. Otto comes to their salvation with the "Pool Mobile." Kevin, Lisa, Marla Lynn and the rest of the neighborhood kids enjoy the pool time until Otto tells them that their time is up and that they don't have enough money in the budget to come back. Upon hearing this, Kevin and Lisa convince Nolan, rather easily, to buy them a pool. After mistakenly building a barn on the first try, the Smiths build a proper pool and suddenly Kevin and Lisa become the most popular kids in the neighborhood. Kevin, Lisa and Marla Lynn's school friends arrive at the Smiths house every day to swim. However, when Kevin is dared to jump from his treehouse into the pool, he gets distracted, and falls and breaks his left leg. Kevin is forced to stay indoors with a cast on his leg while Lisa enjoys her newfound popularity with the other kids swimming in their pool. Marva Lynn and Lisa soon take notice that Kevin is becoming isolated and weird. To suppress Kevin's sudden paranoia, Lisa gives Kevin her telescope for something to do. He first comes to the conclusion that the universe is boring and instead uses the telescope to spy on St. Boniface residents.
Meanwhile, Steve told Kevin to see Rear Window by James Stewart, and Marla Lynn and Lisa were playing at Danny's pool. Paul, Grady, Ed, Fran, Bill, Mick, Roy, Fred, Karl, Milt, Gary and Dave saw Steve and Kevin at the same theater. Steve's parents went on to pick Kevin up. After the movie was over, Kevin was frustrated as he decided to go to school later on.
