I don't think I'd ever felt this much heartache.
I shoved past Roy and opened my front door. Avoiding all eye contact with the men standing in my home.
"Eve. Please, you have to help me!" Cam pleaded.
Instinct told me I needed to protect my friend but how did he expect me to do that when it was two of them and only one of me? Kai alone would catch me before I even got a chance to do anything.
Finally I looked at him. "I'm sorry." And just looking at his hurt expression broke me.
I ran into my bathroom for privacy, unable to comprehend everything going on.
I turned the faucet on and began furiously splashing my face with the cold water.
Maybe I can somehow drown myself in the next like five seconds.
After it felt like I had taken a bath in the sink, I leaned against the door and slid to the floor, drawing my knees up to my chest and let my head rest on my folded arms.
Did I already mention once these waterworks started they don't stop?
I didn't mean to but these doors are apparently paper thin and I could hear everything on the other side.
Kai spoke first. "Get him the fuck out of my sight right now."
"Yeah bro, I got him." Came Roy's frightened voice next.
"It's too late, Kai. She knows now what a piece of shit you are." Cam sounded pretty pleased with himself despite his circumstances. "Just wait until she finds out about all the other women you made deals with."
I heard that and my head snapped up straight.
Other women?
I felt a sick sense of curiosity to find out more.
Do I enjoy constantly getting hurt? Is that what's wrong with me?
I got up from the cold hard tiled floor and braced myself to face the men in my bedroom.
The moment I opened the bathroom door, all eyes were on me.
Kai tried to approach me first, he'd put his shirt back on.
"Evie-" I held up my hand to deter him.
Speaking directly to Cam, "what did you mean, other women he made deals with?" My voice sounded shaky no matter how hard I tried to control my pain.
"Sweet-" Kai tried interrupting.
"I'm not talking to you!" I snapped, completely surprising myself.
"I've known him for years, Eve. He's made the same deal he made you with countless other women who owed money." Cam finished. I looked at him, and he looked back with such pity and sympathy.
I started crying again.
Damn these waterfalls!
"Roy!" Kai barked, snapping Roy back to full attention.
"Right!" He jumped, startled.
He came up behind Cam and yanked on the collar of Cam's shirt. Almost making him trip and fall down. Together, the two of them struggled to walk out of the apartment.
Leaving me alone with him.
Neither of us moved for what seemed like eternity.
"Please leave." I finally worked up enough energy to ask.
