Saturday finally arrived.
I wasn't able to take the day off but I was allowed to at least leave early so I could get ready for the party. And Brent offered to cover my shift the next day so I could relax knowing I didn't have to worry about working hungover.
I swore to myself this was going to be the last time I took advantage of my coworkers. Starting Monday I was going back to normal.
I kept looking at the clock, wishing time would speed up.
I had just dropped off an order at one of my tables when a familiar face surprised me as he walked though the door.
It was Roy.
I walked up to him smiling. "Hey, what are you doing here?" I asked.
"Kai told me to take you back to the apartment and to tell you to take your time getting ready. Glen summoned him to the club early so he can help set up so we'll meet him there later tonight." Roy was speaking to me but I couldn't ignore the way his eyes traveled across the room to lock onto Melanie as she was taking a tables order.
"Oh, well I still have a couple hours though." I said, trying not to grin too much.
"It's alright, he told me to stick with you until tonight." He still hadn't really looked at me.
I got the sudden idea to put him in Melanie's section.
"Well, here," I guided him to one of her empty tables. "Melanie will be with you shortly I'm sure." I said and walked away.
My shift ended after what felt like an eternity. Watching Roy try and fail to flirt with Melanie didn't help my growing anticipation about tonight.
I was in the back putting my apron up and getting my things out of the locker. Melanie came to the back to find me.
"Hey, do you know that guy out there that came in to talk to you?" She asked, twirling a lock of her hair absentmindedly.
"Kinda. His name is Roy. He's pretty sweet." I replied, curious to know what she was thinking.
"Yeah well um, do you mind giving him this?" She asked and handed me a folded pink piece of paper.
I could tell without asking what it was, her number for sure.
I guess Roy's got what it takes after all.
I beamed brightly at her. "Of course!" I said and carefully took the paper to put in my pocket so I didn't lose it.
I said goodbye to the guys as Roy was holding the door open for me. We walked to the car in silence but I was struggling to contain my excitement. As soon as I got in the passenger seat, which surprised Roy, I dug in my pocket for Melanie's number and handed it to him.
He looked at the bright pink paper questioningly.
"What's that?" He asked.
"Melanie's number. She wanted you to have it." I said a little too loudly.
Slowly his eyes widened in dumbfounded surprised.
Then quickly he regained his composure, coughing into his fist to clear the air. He took the paper from me. "Oh, thanks." Was all he said.
We drove to Kai's in silence.
Ian was home to let us in and while the boys hung out in the living room playing video games, I went straight to Kai's room to get ready.
I showered, shaved, scrubbed, lotioned up, the whole nine yards. I wanted to make sure I was like a shiny new penny. The excitement of tonight making me feel a sort of happy nervousness.
