As Millie walked through the entrance to Hogwarts, she was barely comprehending what was happening around her. She felt Cedric's hand on her back and his breath against her ear as he whispered something along the lines of "Are you okay?", but the ringing in her ears was far louder than his voice.
After she'd gotten dressed into her robes on the train, she didn't go back to the compartment as she sat in the bathroom doing her best to breath. Everything felt fuzzy; like it was moving in slow motion. She'd met back up with Cedric and his friends after the nauseating carriage ride, and she still had yet to say anything.
She felt like she might throw up- the knowledge that her dad was likely to die so soon was insufferable. She paused before entering the Great Hall, staring in at all the bright, shining smiles of returning students. Her legs were moving before she realized what was happening as she ran up towards the Gryffindor common room.
"Millie, wait!" Cedric called out, following closely behind her.
Millie reached the portrait before realizing she didn't know the new password.
"Please," she begged, her breath barely stable as she stared at the Fat Lady, her eyes pleading desperately. "I just need to go to my dorm,"
"I'm sorry, but I can't let you in without the password," The Fat Lady said smugly. "You should know the rules by your seventh year,"
"Exactly!" she cried. "My seventh year! You know me! Just let me in!"
She suddenly felt Cedric's hand on her shoulder making her jump back. He could feel her shaking.
"Millie," he started calmly. "Just come with me, we can go back to my dorm. You need to take a deep breath,"
"I don't need to take a deep breath, I need to get into my bloody dorm!" she screamed. She turned back to the Fat Lady, her eyes brimming with tears as she begged. "Please let me in...I'll do anything you want if you just let me in,"
"Hmm..." she looked up in thought, her arms crossed delicately as she held herself up with pride. "Will you listen to my seven act opera when it's complete?"
"Yes," Millie stated. "I promise,"
"Oh, well...alright I suppose."
The portrait swung open and Millie thanked her quickly before sprinting into the room and up the stairs. Cedric followed after her, nerves coursing throughout his body as he heard her footsteps.
Millie slammed the door shut. Her hands ran through her hair as she paced. The room spun around her- she tried to breath but nothing was working. She heard Cedric knock on the door and ask if he could come in, but when she didn't answer he just unlocked it with his wand and stepped in, closing it behind him.
"Love, sit down," he sighed, walking up to her and holding her shoulders to stop her pacing.
He watched as her chest rose and fell quickly, panic clearly engulfing her. Her lip quivered as she looked up at him, unable to do or say anything in the current moment. Cedric grabbed her hand, pulling her with him as he sat on her bed. She followed after him, still shaking as she sunk into her mattress. Her head dropped to her hands as she tried to breath. Cedric's hand rubbed her back as he held her close to him before she leaned over, dropping her head in his lap and laying on her side along her bed.
"Did something happen when you were getting changed?" Cedric asked.
Millie squeezed her eyes shut before taking another deep breath.
