CHAPTER 12

"We saw him on a tree branch doing nothing. Since we can't see you everywhere and you said you would kill him yourself last night, we thought that maybe he did something bad to you, so I called him and asked him questions. He said that he couldn't remember anything since he woke up, even his name. But before he left, he said we didn't need to worry since he couldn't remember everything..." Bertolt narrated with a frown.

It was already night. They were outside, far away from the others, as they discussed what had happened today. Of course, they changed locations in case the man suddenly appeared again. After Annie came back from the Stohess district, around seven in the evening, they immediately sneaked out to gather. Now they were in an open field with a bonfire in the center, away from the inns and the forest. This way, they were sure that no one would hear them without their knowledge.

Annie hardened her gaze to the fire as she let the information goes into her head. She clenched her hand and looked at the unbelievably quiet blonde man beside her, who was just staring at nothing. She stood up harshly as she grabbed Reiner's collar. She's so angry. If only this man had let her kill the stranger in the very first place, then none of this would have happened. She gritted her teeth and looked at Reiner, who was obviously terrified by her fury.

"This is all your fault, Reiner... I am the only one who's doing all the dangerous work, while you're here sitting your ass off with some old folks, planting and joking around like idiots! And because of your stupidity, that man is still alive, and if he is lying, then we are all doomed!" She couldn't contain all of her rage as she shouted at Reiner from the top of her lungs and tossed him like a doll at the last word.

Annie watched him as she catches her breath, trying to stand since he fell from the log that he was sitting on. A frown is clearly written on his face while gathering his thoughts. Finally, he stood up and stared blankly at the huffing woman in front of him.

"Annie... We both know that you can't do that. You can't just kill a man when you're still unsure if he is innocent or not." Reiner clenched his hands from both sides. He saw Bertolt already by their side, trying to stop them if this fight continued to deepen.

"I can because I have to. How about you? Aren't you the one who killed all those people?! Have you become soft after you chitchat with some people here? Aren't you the one who insisted on continuing this plan in the first place even after Marcel died because of you?!" Annie shouted back. She knew it was below the belt, but she just couldn't take it anymore. Reiner's eyes widened with pain. She gritted her teeth.

"Hey, that's enough. We can talk about this calmly, alright?" Bertolt nervously stated as he grabbed Annie's shoulder, but she only smacked it away and returned to her post. He looked at Reiner and gulped when he saw him out of focus and just staring at the ground with wide eyes.
