CHAPTER 27
Today is the day.
"You heard the gunshot right?"
"Yeah... I wonder why."
Naruto stifles a yawn. He didn't know anything about the gunshot, but it was the topic ever since he woke up. Maybe because he was too engulfed by his own nightmares that he didn't even hear the loud bang it made. However, he doesn't really care, so he just minds his own business, which is to focus on his growing headache. He wished Sakura was here... Perhaps she could treat him before they get to the expedition. But he knew that she was not gonna join them, considering the fact that she ran away from their commander, so he dismissed the thought.
"Did Commander Erwin say anything 'bout it?"
"No. But I'm pretty sure it was nothing. Probably some drunk soldier who wants to flaunt his gun or something. Besides, there was no one when I looked down, so don't think about it." One of his senior colleagues said, but it didn't stop the others from talking about it.
The sun just rises over the horizon, and it's the cue for them to leave. They were all on their horses with mixed feelings about their mission. It's so hard to think that you can die at any moment, so talking about the gunshot was probably the only way to get their minds out of those thoughts.
On the other hand, Erwin, Levi, and Hange had a grim face as they thought back about what happened in their office.
<<< FLASHBACK
"Don't tell me she was the reason behind the gunshot..." Hange was furrowing he brows, pondering about the worst-case scenario with Sakura being skin-alive right at this moment. Their department was in a different building, which is why they only found out about it now.
"She never learned. Always giving us headaches." Levi groaned, slumping his back on the soft sofa. He was not disappointed, he was way beyond pissed at the pink-headed who always wants to get them into this situation. Levi hardened his eyes as a certain memory came up. A carriage with an emblem of military police was perfectly parked somewhere in the civilian area when they went to gather some supplies.
"Nile could be the one who did this. They somehow learnt about Sakura and decided to move before we could do anything." He breathed, shifting his gaze to the man who was calmly sitting in his seat. ""It was so bold of him to do it around our headquarters. Your position is at stake, Erwin. If Commander Zachary hears of this, he will surely let Nile take Sakura and might target you for hiding this."
Erwin frowned deeply as he thought thoroughly about the situation. They have been waiting for this moment to come, to finally use Sakura's ability, but faith must be wanting them to go down in flames. Yes, he already thought that this may happen, but he was still disappointed that it did occur like this.
Yet again, Sakura was only a piece of his plan. They still have Eren, so they could still use the same procedure and strategy to catch the hiding culprit in his nest. Despite that, he also wished that Sakura was not getting dissected just what Nile wanted to do to her. She's the most valuable person that he thinks could save humanity after all, even though she's full of mysteries.
He would do whatever it takes to make things go his way.
He sighed. "We don't have a choice but to act like nothing happened. The plan to assign someone in her place is still on, so they would take the bait." As much as he didn't want this to be much worse, he had to stick to the plan to see if there was really someone who was after Sakura.
By 'they', he was referring to someone who has abilities like hers. Or maybe, the one who erases her memories regarding the note they found after that incident. Besides that, he was also referring to the culprit behind the deaths of Sonny and Bean. Someone who doesn't want them to know anything about titan, someone who's also a shifter.
