"Good morning, detective," Rick said as he said peacefully at his desk in the den. Brayden hadn't yet woken up, but I figured walking a room away from the kid wouldn't kill me.
As I approached, Castle put up his laptop and turned towrd me. "How is my lovely wife doing this morning?"
"Not too bad," I replied in a raspy morning tone. "What are we working on?"
"My next novel, of course," he said as I took a seat on his desk, my legs to either side of his.
He then directed a question into my stomach. "And how are you, honey?"
Again, I demanded, "Castle, stop it! I won't get the results from the bloodwork until tomorrow and we don't know whether I'm pregnant. Stop talking to my possibly empty womb."
"Oh, sweetheart, mommy didn't mean that. She just hasn't had her morning decaf yet."
"Stop," I laughed, removing his hands from my waist. His eyes then met mine and meshed perfectly in my gaze, not moving an inch from where they landed. As I watched him peer into my, trying to figure out what he was thinking, I finally snapped him out of it by asked, "What?!"
"Nothing," he grinned. "You're just beautiful."
My smile brightened a bit and I leaned down to kiss him softly. He then pulled away and told me, "Brayden's awake."
I replied, "He's asleep," barely leaving his lips.
Castle insisted, "He's awake. Can't you hear him?"
"I was just in there, babe. He's asleep. I promise." Then, I heard it. Brayden's distinct bable that was so new to me, but still sounded so natural and beckoning that I couldn't deny it was him. It was definitely him. He was awake, and I had missed his call. Even when he was calling for me by... title, I guess... I still didn't hear him pining for his mama. "Or not."
Rick questioned, "You want me to get him?"
"No, he's- he's calling... me," I said, still not used to the sound after three days. "He wants me. I'll go grab him."
"Are you sure," he asked with a questioning brow. "Cause you could leave him for a minute. He's not crying and... I missed a spot."
My eyes slendered in confusion. "Missed a spot?" His lip once again reached for mine and covered them passionately.
When he pulled away, he replied, "I think I got it now."
My eyes rolled as I lifted myself off my desk and started toward B's crib, which we had moved into the room downstairs after he started crawling. When I got in, B was sitting up in the crib, looking through the bars, trying to pull himself up. "There's my little man," I said in a childish tone. He grinned furiously. "How's my baby boy?"
Again he mumbled,"Mama ma ma," as I got to his side. He then laughed to himself as I leaned over the crib and lifted him into the air.
"Is someone giggly this morning?" He smiled.
As I strode out to the den again, Brayden launched his arms out at his daddy as soon as he was in view. "Oh, I see how it is," I told Brayden. "You only called mommy because it's the only name you know."
Rick happily took B and asked in a strange voice, "You causin trouble for mommy again?" B didn't respond and simply buried his face in Rick's shoulder. "You take after your sister, don't you?"
I smiled at Castle with B and asked, "Takes after Alexis?"
"Oh yeah," he stated. "The second she could say 'dada', I was stuck hauling her between people all the time. She suckered me into doing a lot of things by using 'dada' instead of 'daddy' until she was four years old."
"Clever kid," I replied with a sly grin. "B's got a good role model for himself."
Rick the replied, putting his hand on my stomach (knowing it would drive me nuts), "So does this little one."
"I swear, you do that at the precinct if you ever stop by and I'll kill you," I stated, shoving his hand off me.
He replied with wide eyes and humor in his tone, "I know. You don't mess with a pregnant woman and/or her hormones."
"My gun is literally a two step walk away."
"You wouldn't hurt me while I have B in my lap," he cocked.
I answered, "Perhaps when you sleep then. Or while you're writing."
"Goodluck in prison," he waved.
"Won't need luck. I'll simply not get caught."
He looked at me with slender eyes as though he was about to challenge that premise before Alexis knockef on the door. We invited her in and she told us, "I made breakfast with Gram if either of you are hungry." Smiles dawned on our faces as an answer and Rick was standing almost immediately. He led the way to the kitchen, Brayden on his side as he rushed out toward the food.
As I stood behind him, the thought of food seemed appealing until I got a whiff of it. The moment the scent intoxicated my sinuses, nausea smashed into my body. I couldn't think. I had to move. I turned around and dashed off to the bathroom, leaving the group in my dust as I stormed into the restroom. I was hurling before I knew it, and a short moment later, Rick was behind me, his hand on my back as I attempted to catch my breath. As I fell back in his arms, he kindly pushed back my hair, whispering softly in a kind tone, "And so it begins."
