"We have a critical patient!" Someone called from the Ambulance entrance.
I had just changed out of my work clothes, ready for a seven-hour flight when everyone started scrambling around.
"Car wreck on the intersection, a male, in mid-twenties, brown hair, brown eyes. Trauma to the neck, chest and arms..."

I don't think anyone has ever been ready to see someone on the brink of death. It was terrifying in any situation. The feeling of never knowing what happened or how to not know if you'll ever be able to speak to them again. To ever hug them and tell them you love them. Your heart breaks into a million pieces while not knowing the outcome, and it all happened within a minute of seeing this patient.
