A few weeks later, Aspen had gained a little more control over her powers. But two days ago, Aspen almost lost control.
Now, Aspen laid on the ground in the Avengers tower training room. Loki stood next to her.
"Aspen, for the last time. You are not doomed", Loki said.
"Yes, I am, God of Lies and you know it. It's been weeks. I lost control. It happens. It's my life", Aspen said.
"This is not the child I've been teaching for the past few weeks, speaking", Loki said.
"Uh, aren't you 17 in human years? You're a child too", Aspen said.
"I could throw one of the Maximoffs down a staircase and have you catch them".
"Don't do that. Does all your thoughts involve murder and violence?" Aspen asks.
Tony and Steve came into the room. "Aspen, there are people just like you, who controlled their powers. You can do that", Tony said.
"Tony...", Aspen started.
"Wanna be an Avenger, kid? Don't give up", Tony said.
"And get off your ass", Loki said.
Silence passed. Aspen looked at Loki. She laughed on the inside, amused that Loki just swore.
She stands up. "Grab your staff", Loki said. The staff flew into Aspen's hand.
After Aspen's training with Loki, Aspen was in the kitchen, baking a cake. Steve and Natasha walked into the room.
"Hey, uh, can we talk Aspen?" Steve asked.
"Sure", Aspen says as she adds chocolate frosting to the cake.
"Aspen, Steve is worried about you getting into the field. Are you sure you're ready?" Natasha asked.
"I want to save lives instead of destroying them. Being called the Destroyer is not a good way to live",Aspen said.
"Aspen, it's going to be dangerous. It'll be even more dangerous if you don't have control", Steve said.
"Is this because I was in a glum mood earlier?" Aspen asked. "I'm upset, okay? I lost control. I could've killed someone. That's why Loki's helping me, remember?"
Aspen grabbed the powdered sugar and sprinkled it all over the cake. "We made a promise to you when we first met. We promised you'd be safe", Natasha said.
"Well, in Tony's words, 'She has superpowers. She'll never be safe'. I heard your conversation earlier. Was he telling the truth?" Aspen asked.
"No, Aspen. You are safe here. But going out on the field, that can be dangerous", Natasha said.
"So I'm supposed to stay here for the rest of my life?" Aspen asked.
"All we're asking is that you be careful",Steve said.
"Hm", Aspen hummed.
Pietro zoomed into the kitchen. "Come on, we've been waiting for almost two hours!" He complained.
"It is not done, Pietro!" Aspen shouted. Pietro groaned in frustration. He zoomed out of the kitchen. "Everyone wants their hands on this cake".
"Aspen, promise me you'll be careful",Steve said.
"We're talking about fighting crime and kicking ass. I don't know how careful I'll be", Aspen said.
"Aspen", Steve said.
"Okay. I promise", Aspen said. Steve walked out of the kitchen. Aspen sighed.
"He's just trying to look after you. You know that, right?" Natasha asked. Aspen nodded. "You don't know how to kick ass, do you?"
"I was hoping maybe you could teach me", Aspen said.
"We'll start tomorrow. I promise I won't hit you with a stick", Natasha said. Aspen smiled at her. Natasha walks out of the room. She followed Steve to the meeting room.
"Steve", Natasha says once they've made it into the meeting room.
"We said we'd keep her safe. We can't break that promise. And if we do, what was the point of making that promise?" Steve asked.
"I don't want to break our promise either, but we can't keep her locked up in here forever", Natasha said.
"So we put her out in the field?" Steve asked.
"If she wants to go out there, it's her choice. We can't hold her back. When we rescued Aspen, she was out of control, she had no home. We gave her a home and a family. I know we can't give her her parents, but you are such a dad", Natasha says. "My point is, we've never been the ones to hold her back. We can't start now".
Meanwhile, Aspen brings her cake into the living room. Pietro, Wanda, Rhodey, Bucky, Sam and Scott grabbed a slice of the cake.
Aspen looks at Loki. "You're welcome to have one", She says to Loki. Loki grabbed a slice.
"This is amazing, Aspen", Wanda said.
"Thanks", Aspen said. She turned around to see Steve walk into the room. "Hey, do you want a slice?"
"Uh sure", Steve said.
Aspen and Steve sat next to Wanda and Sam. They grabbed a slice of the cake and enjoyed it with the others.
