It was your first actual day here, but you already felt like it had been a year. All the questions you had yesterday were answered, or, answered as well as they could be answered. You didn't know why you were here, who the creators were, what would happen if you got out of the maze or if you would even ever get out. But by now you had accepted the fact this confusion would stay.
The only thing really annoying you at the moment was your name. You couldn't remember it. You just couldn't. You talked to the other boys about when they had remembered their names. Some told you they knew it the day they came, some said they recalled it a bit later, and most of them just reassured you, although that was not what you had asked for.
You didn't need pity. You were in the same situation as all of those shanks and still they treated you differently. Maybe that was because you were a girl of course, but maybe they just thought you were weak. Maybe both. Probably both. You sighed.
Overthinking wouldn't solve anyone's problems. But a shower would. You stood up - It took a second longer to find your balance than you thought and the hammock you had just climbed out of wasn't that helpful at all. When you finally managed to stand up properly you realised most hammocks were empty already. Was it that late? Had the majority gone off to work?
You shook the boy next to you awake, who had apparently just had a very vivid dream, judging by the fact his legs were shaking like he was running and he looked terrified when he suddenly came back to reality.
"Thomas", you grunted, annoyed. "It's just me, no need to be that scared." During the last few hours you had grown quite close to him. He was a nice bloke, and new to the glade too, he had just arrived a few days before.
Nobody knew what that was about, since the box usually came up once a month, not two times a week, but you were also the first girl ever, so it was just another weird thing happening. Gally seemed to take those incidents way too serious though, he had been glaring at you ever since you arrived and not directed a single word towards you. But he didn't like Thomas either, so you being friends with him was probably just another reason for the Builder's hatred.
"Sorry", Thomas murmured after getting some of his orientation back. "Nightmare." You nodded. No wonder, this place probably gave everyone nightmares. You weren't an exception. Tonight you had barely got any sleep at all, but when you had drifted off, you found yourself locked in a water tank, unable to get out, screaming and kicking the glass without any effect.
"I want to go shower. Can you stand guard? I trust you, and I don't want any of those slint-heads", you pointed at the guys already working, "surprisingly standing in the shower with me." Thomas had by now sat up and notably didn't look tired at all. "Sure", he responded. You smiled and stood up.
Once you had reached the doors of the bathroom you remembered that you didn't have a towel yet. "Thomas?", you asked, turning around to face him. "Where do I get a towel?" He shrugged. "Newt gave me one when I arrived. I'm sure he just forgot to give you yours. But you can take mine if you want." You smiled again. That would work, although you weren't so sure if you actually wanted to dry your body with a sweaty, dirty towel - hopefully Thomas had washed it after using it last time.
You opened the doors and stepped in. Luckily, none of the four shower stalls were being used right now, otherwise you would've had to wait. You wanted to get these clothes off of your body as soon as possible. By now even your hair was full of sand and dirt and you were sure your shorts did not have brown stains when you had arrived yesterday.
"Could you, you know-", you started, looking back at Thomas, who seemed unsure of what to do now. "turn around, maybe?" His face reddened, and he mumbled an embarrassed "sorry" while turning towards the wooden wall.
You quickly took off all your clothes and put them on a pile on one of the sinks. Stepping into the shower stall on your left, you let out a small sigh. Thomas was a great friend. You didn't think you would have had the courage to go shower without him standing guard. Not like you were afraid of someone seeing you naked, but you didn't know any of these shanks nor their intentions yet and you didn't want anyone fantasising about you.
"Thomas?", you asked after checking the shower. "Hm?", he responded, not turning around. "How do I do this?" You weren't familiar with all of that bathroom stuff yet and the different pipes and buttons just looked like a big riddle to you. "Push that little button on your right. It should be easy to see, really." You looked at the metal in front of you, searching for anything that you'd be able to push, until you found a button about a few inches above your head. "Why the shuck is this thing that high", you cursed, but were able to push it anyway. And then you screamed.
The water dripping on you was ice-cold. And you didn't expect that. You jumped out of the stall the fastest you could, but your feet were wet and you couldn't find halt as quickly as you needed - you fell to the ground with a loud thud. "Shuck!", you heard Thomas curse when he saw you lying on the floor.
"Hey, can you hear me? Are you okay?", he rushed towards you and lifted your head up. You grunted. "Ignoring the fact I nearly killed myself just now, I'm doing absolutely great", you sarcastically joked, flinching as pain flooded through your body.
Thomas helped you sit up and then ran to the sinks to get his towel, wrapping it around you a second later. "Thanks", you said through gritted teeth, rubbing your forehead. For a second you had forgotten that you were naked just a moment before, but now you painfully acknowledged the fact Thomas had seen your exposed body.
"Are you actually okay? I can take you to the Med Jacks if you want." You just laughed, feeling way more comfortable with a towel wrapped around you, even though your head was still hurting like hell. "No, I'm fine. Thanks for the towel Thomas." He smiled. "And if you tell anybody I nearly got murdered by a shower I'm gonna kill you."
Both of you were laughing when the door opened and a panting Newt came running into the room. He opened his mouth as if he was about to say something and immediately closed it again. Then he raised an eyebrow.
"What the-", he started, but you cut him off. Blushing, you realised how weird this scenery must look to him. You were sitting on the ground with nothing but a towel on, Thomas kneeling next to you, still holding you up with his hand on your back. "I fell", you stated quickly. "That's why I screamed." Newt shook his head, seemingly amused now. Thomas only cleared his troath. Nobody spoke for a second.
"Are you okay then, greenie?", Newt asked. You nodded, way too embarrassed to say anything more. "Great, I'll head back to work." Newt left the room, smiling to himself. You had an idea of what he was thinking and you absolutely didn't want him to. Nothing had happened between you and Thomas. You actually fell.
"Hey", Thomas softly said, drawing your attention. You looked at him, confused. "I asked you something." You felt your face heat up again. Shuck. You were probably staring at the door with a dead look on your face for the whole time while he was talking. "Sorry", you said. "Could you repeat that?" Thomas laughed and nodded. "I asked if you still wanted to shower?" Right, the shower! You totally forgot about that. How embarrassing. "I guess so", you responded, slowly. "I need to after all."
Thomas smiled. He actually had a cute smile. In fact, he had a cute face. His eyes were cute and his lips and his hair and his lips and lips and- wait, what?
You shook your head. What was that? Did you really just check out Thomas? The only boy you actually called your friend around here? With one hand you absent-mindedly grabbed your towel to fix it while standing up, the other one clutching Thomas' arm as he supported you. "Thanks, again."
When you turned on the shower this time you were prepared for the cold water.
