Today was your day off, allowing you for the first time in what seemed like weeks to lie in. When you got up, Gally had already left the hut and was outside, most likely shouting at his fellow Builders for not doing their work right. Though as you listened, you couldn't make out his voice. You frowned, patting the empty bed next to you in an attempt to find your boyfriend. No, he had definitely gone outside. Yawning, you slowly opened your eyes and blinked a few times to adjust to the light before rolling over onto your side.
You were still tired and just staying in bed seemed welcoming, but also absolutely boring since Gally had apparently decided to leave early. After all you needed your morning cuddles, no matter what, otherwise you would be in a bad mood for the whole day - so you got up, changed into fresh clothes and rubbed your eyes in an attempt to look somewhat alive.
"Mor- what the shuck are you doing here?", you grunted the second you stepped out and found Gally sitting on the grass, leaning against your hut, scribbling in some kind of notebook. This was more than just unusual. Even on days off he was always with the Builders, supervising them or spending his time with you. What was happening today?
"Morning to you too babe", Gally laughed and closed the notebook, placed it together with the pencil he had been holding to his right and motioned for you to sit down beside him. Though hesitant you flopped down and he wrapped his arm around your back, pulling you closer so you could snuggle into his side. "You're warm", you stated and relaxed, resting your head on his shoulder. He was indeed warm, just as he usually was, but now he had been sitting outside in the fresh morning breeze for quite some time and you were surprised he wasn't feeling cold.
"Mhm", Gally mumbled and put his other arm around your body as well. "How long have you been outside?", you asked, stifling another yawn. The Builder chuckled. "A bit. It's almost lunch, you know?" You stretched your arms, careful enough not to slap Gally in the face. "Really? I've been sleeping for so long?"
As drowsiness overcame you again you closed your eyes a bit. You had really needed some sleep. Nightmares had been keeping you awake for several days and Gally had started to worry, so he sent you to the Med jacks yesterday. Clint and Jeff had then given the both of you two full days off to recover, believing you were unable to actually calm down without your boyfriend around. Neither of you had complained though. You rarely got to spend time together, so two days off were a real treat.
"Pretty much, yeah", Gally chuckled and placed a kiss on top of your head. You grinned as you opened your eyes and tilted your head back a bit so you could look at him. "I've saved breakfast for you though", he continued.
You turned around completely and Gally grunted as he had to let go of you so you could face him. Your lips were slightly parted and your eyes opened wide. You looked so shocked, surprised and thankful at the same time that he had to laugh and lean forward to peck your lips, his hand brushing your hair away from you face and resting on your cheek.
"Breakfast sounds amazing actually", you said, giggling as he moved his finger down to your chin and forced it closer to him once again - not that you were complaining. Though he wasn't closing the space. He was just holding you in that position, nothing more than a few inches left between your faces, his breath meeting your nose and yours meetings his lips. Eventually you started hiccoughing and soon both of you were clutching your stomaches, laughing harder than you thought was humanly possible. Even though it had interrupted the romantic moment you were sharing, you weren't mad about it. You hadn't laughed like this in weeks.
"Let me get your breakfast then", Gally stated after calming down. "You stay here I'll be right back!" You sighed and lay down in the grass, sprawled out in the weirdest position, but you were comfortable. That was until something poked your back. Groaning, you sat up and searched the ground for whatever had interrupted your little nap.
"What the shuck", you cursed, grabbing hold of the pencil and notebook Gally had put to the side. Curious as you were, you flipped open the small book and let out a gasp. There was you! Gally had drawn... you?
Carefully, you ran your finger along the detailed drawing. It showed just your face, your hair tied into a high ponytail, and you were flashing a smile. Your eyes were sparkling and you looked so happy you immediately had to grin at the book. This drawing looked awesome. Gently, you turned over to the next page, giggling at the shown image. This time Gally had drawn your whole body, and you were surrounded by boys he had only sketched, your fists raised. You looked determined, Gally had even pictured your small frown. You remembered that day. It was the first and last time you were ever in the Fighting Circle.
You turned to the third page and your eyes widened. This one showed you while working in the gardens. You were leaning on a shovel, laughing, and your hair was being moved because of the slight breeze. It seemed like you had just turned around to look at the artist. You were overwhelmed by the details. It felt as if you were standing face-to-face with yourself, and you looked absolutely wonderful.
"I told Frypan to- what are you doing there (y/n)?", Gally interrupted you. You looked up to face him in awe, amazed by his hidden talent. The Builder's expression showed just how scared he was of your reaction. He had never shown you his drawings because he had feared you wouldn't like them or, even worse, be mad at him for drawing you without your consent. "These look wonderful Gally! I never knew", you trailed off, shifting your focus back to the notebook. You flipped to the fourth page.
Again, you saw yourself. You were leaning against a tree, had drawn up your knees and were apparently focused on the small butterfly sitting on your finger. You giggled. You could recall that. It must've been about two months ago, a bonfire night. You and Gally had your day off together for the first time and, though you weren't dating back then, you had spent the whole day together in the Deadheads, not even caring about the new Greenie. Gally had been sitting across from you, watching as you tried to make friends with the tiny creature that had landed on your hand.
You glanced up as Gally sat down next to you, his lips curled into a small smile, studying the drawing in the notebook you were still holding. "I look at them everyday", he suddenly stated and lifted his head to meet your gaze. "Helps me remember. I don't want to forget any of the moments we shared. After all, who knows what happens in this place. I could be dead by tomorrow."
You sighed, closing the notebook. You had known that Gally was worrying, but in this moment you finally understood just how much. He had been holding back for months, wanting to comfort you and help you through your own fear and worry. You put down the book, lifted your body up just to sit down in the Builder's lap a second later. "You should've shown me earlier. I look really good when you draw me, you know", you whispered, crossing your arms behind his neck. He gulped, letting go of the breakfast bowl he had put next to the two of you to grip hold of your thighs.
"Really?", he asked huskily. "I always thought I couldn't even capture half of your beauty." You giggled again, a too-familiar blush painting your cheeks red. "Thanks", you breathed, noticing how his gaze finally flickered down to your lips. Just as he leaned in, closing the space left, wanting to connect your lips with his, you pulled your arms back and jumped up.
With a sneaky grin you snatched the bowl off the grass and ran into your hut, knowing it wouldn't be long until Gally had recovered and would follow you.
