I love you - Gally

"You're not gonna be a Runner!"

I threw my hands into the air in frustration. "You're not the boss of me, Gally!", I cried out. I had just told him that both Minho and Alby had agreed to me being a Runner, and of course I knew he would not like the idea, but I thought he would at least accept it - after all, it was my own choice.

"No, but I just so happen to be your boyfriend!"

I rolled my eyes and tilted my head back in exasperation. Why couldn't he just calm down? No, he was the one who decided to scream at me, and I was not going to back down this time. "That doesn't mean you get to decide what I do! You can't tell me what I can and can't do! If I want to be a Runner I'll be a Runner and you can't do anything against it!", I yelled and pointed a finger at him, then me, so fast that I was most likely looking like I was trying to stab the air.

We had been sitting at the edge of the Deadheads when I had told him, but I didn't care that I was standing on the dry grass of the glade now, in eyesight for everyone who wanted to look - which was everyone, literally. I had already noticed some boys turning towards us when Gally raised his voice, but now all of them were watching. Not even Alby or Newt were stupid enough to interrupt. "I'm trying to protect you, don't you get that?", Gally screamed back and I groaned in annoyance. I couldn't have cared less about who was listening to us right now.

"You don't have to protect me! I am fully capable of looking after myself and, in fact, I wouldn't even be alone out there! Minho would be with me." I watched as Gally clenched his fists, but it didn't scare me anymore. I knew that he would never hurt me, no matter how enraged he was. It was simply a sign that he was getting too angry to back down now. "Oh yeah", he grunted. "What an improvement." I frowned at his sarcasm. "Minho knows the maze like no one else. I'll be safe as long as I'm with him!", I argued.

"Oh, I bet he's gonna be all that helpful when he gets stung, or worse, you both get stuck, or a Griever catches you in broad daylight-" My mouth fell open at all the possibilities he seemed to have thought of in just a split second while I had processed them over weeks. I stopped him before he could list too many worst-case-scenarios. "Unlikely", I said. "Such a thing has never happened before." Gally grunted at my statement and rolled his eyes. The anger was starting to boil inside of me, my cheeks were glowing red and I had to keep my hands from shaking. I couldn't lose my temper. "You have no idea what's happened already", he snapped and I immediately interrupted him. "Because no one tells me!"

"No one tells you because those stories are nothing you should be worrying about", he retorted, his voice gaining volume with every spoken word. I groaned. Again. I wasn't three years old anymore! He didn't need to protect me.

"Well now I have a reason to be worrying about them! Because I will become a Runner and I will go out into the maze and that's absolutely certain! And if you can't accept that", I stopped. My voice broke. Was I strong enough for this? "And- and if you can't accept that then... then maybe this won't work out!"

I turned around, not wanting him to see that I was finally tearing up. I couldn't lose him. Never. I wouldn't know what to even do without him. But I also couldn't stay in the Glade any longer, watching as the Runners left and came back everyday without running the maze myself.

I hadn't taken more than five steps when Gally yelled at me to stop walking. I froze. I wanted to walk away. I wanted to leave. But I couldn't. The desperation in his voice, the tired, broken sound. There was no anger anymore. And I couldn't simply walk away.

"I love you (y/n)! I don't want you to go in there because if you get hurt I will never forgive myself, and if- if you die-" I turned back around, wiping away the tears that had started to stream down my face. Gally hadn't cried, he never did, but I could see he was just as affected as me. He put out a hand and I gladly took it, closing the space between us.

"You love me?", I whispered, laughing so I would eventually stop sobbing. Gally put his forehead against mine and I closed my eyes at the familiar touch. "I love you", he repeated and I couldn't help the tears still wetting my face and now his shirt. "I love you too", I mumbled and finally I also heard him laugh. I opened my eyes again and looked up.

"I'm never gonna run on my own. I'll always do what Minho says. I'll turn around after we had lunch. I will never be late. And if I ever hear a Griever I'll run. Right back to you."

Gally put a hand to my cheek, trailing it down my jawline until he reached my chin. He lifted it up so I was forced to look into his eyes. "Promise?", he asked and I could tell that he wasn't any less worried than before, but he had accepted my choice. "Promise", I sniffed and finally his lips met mine, making up for everything we had just been through. I smiled, though breaking the kiss because of it. Gally raised an eyebrow and I giggled, closing the space left another time.

"Get a room, lovebirds!", Zart suddenly shouted across the Glade and I turned away from Gally, earning a grunt. Everyone was still staring at us and I felt the blush creep up my face as I realised not only had they been watching us fight, but also how Gally had shouted he loved me. For the first time. I snuggled into his chest, hiding my face in his shirt in embarrassment.

"Really can't have any privacy around here", I heard him yell back before he wrapped his arms around me and picked me up from the ground. I shrieked. I was dangling from his shoulder as he made his way into the Deadheads just a few feet away. "Gally!", I laughed and tried to slap his back, wanting to show him that I was not approving of this. "You can't just pick me up and take me wherever you want!"

"Well, you see, I actually can", he retorted and I grunted, shaking my head.

"Physically", I argued. "Not morally!"
