It was the morning of Elijah and Elena's engagement party and everyone was happy. Elijah had left early to pick up his parents from the airport. Elena had decided she needed to talk things through with Rebekah so she arranged a lunch with her, Bonnie and Caroline. The four of them sat at a table in Rousseau's, tension thick. Camille came over and they all ordered drinks, desperate for some relief from the awkwardness.
"Bekah, it has been brought to my attention that you know about uh... well us." Elena began nervously.
"Yes."
"We wanted you to have the chance to ask us anything you want to so that you can trust us," Caroline told her. When Camille returned with their drinks, they ordered food. Elena relaxed slightly, knowing that meant Rebekah was going to hear them out.
"When did you know that you loved my brother?" She was directing the question at all of them so they made eye contact, silently deciding who would go first.
Caroline thought for a moment. There was the time he gave her literal fireworks. That had been pretty magical. Or when they had danced at the ball.
Elena thought of the time she cooked for him. Or when he had asked her to move in with him.
Bonnie knew immediately.
"We were at his apartment early on in our relationship and I fell asleep on the couch. He carried me up to his room and I woke up the next morning tucked into bed. I went to the main room where he had made himself a bed on the couch. When I asked him about it he made a joke that I snore but I could tell he just wanted to respect my privacy. But anyway, the moment I saw him sleeping peacefully on his own couch. That was the moment I knew I loved him." Bonnie bit her lip as Rebekah studied her. It was nerve-wracking to have her relationship analyzed, especially given the circumstances.
"I walked in on him painting once. He looked so focused yet calm. There was something truly beautiful about his passion. The way he strategically planned each brush stroke while simultaneously just doing whatever felt right. He's incredible." Caroline gushed about Klaus.
"The first time he tried to teach me how to cook. I completely failed but he kept supporting me and helping me learn. Eventually, we were both covered in flour and he took my hand and twirled me around the kitchen." Elena smiled to herself as she thought of all her wonderful memories with Elijah, now that she was free from Kathrine's influences. Well, almost.
"Why did you agree to Katherine's plan?"
"Because she promised us a lot of money." Caroline blushed, slightly embarrassed by how easily they had been bought.
"And we didn't know your brothers. We had only known what Katherine had told us about them." Elena added.
"Plus it is very hard to say no to Katherine Pierce when she wants something." Bonnie finished earning hums of agreement from the others.
"I don't trust you." Bekah sighed. "But I believe you love my brothers. However as a precaution, Elena you will sign a prenup. The same goes for the two of you if you ever try to marry my brothers."
"Okay." Elena nodded, completely understanding where she was coming from.
"And you will tell my brother the truth before the ceremony," Rebekah added.
"Rebek-"
"Those are my terms. If you can't accept them, you are free to stay the hell away from my family." Rebekah was not budging. Deep down, they all knew she was right. Elena knew she couldn't have a future with Elijah if it was all based on a lie.
"Deal."
"Now that we've got that out of the way, I would like to propose a toast. To sisters." Rebekah held up her drink, locking eyes with Caroline.
"To sisters."
"And the future Mrs. Mikaelson." Elena was grateful that Rebekah approved of them, despite everything they had been through.
"Speaking of, we have a party we need to get ready for."
