Chapter 2

The next day, Meredith went back home to her dad.

That didn't last for long. He left. He left because it was too much.

"Ma?"
"Yes Der bear?"
"Stop. I'm a big boy!"
"Ok! What do you need Mr. Big Boy?"
"Why is Mer's dad leaving without Mer?"

Carolyn watched out the glass door to see the little girl crying in the road waddling trying to run towards her father.

"I don't know sweetie. I'll be back."

Carolyn stepped out of the door. Derek close behind.

The sound of a car was appearing. Next thing you know, a car is headed towards Meredith.

Derek ran and pushed the little girl into the grass, him going down with her.

He may have been small but it worked.
"What was that for?"
"You would have got hit by a car!"
"Oh. You aren't my night in shining...uhh. What is the word?"
"Armor?"
"No. Whatever. You aren't my night in shining whatever."
"Ok. That's fine. I can be Superman!"
"And I can be super woman!" Meredith said jumping up with Derek. Their hands on there hips.

They ran back to Carolyn.
"I'm glad your ok! Let's go you two. I will call your mom Mer."

"Ok!"

Meredith and Derek ran up to his room. They grabbed their stuffed animals.

"Knife!" Derek demanded.
Meredith handed him a play-doe knife.
They pretended to cut open and operate on their stuffed toys.

"All better Mr. Bear!"
"Ms. Bear is all better too!" Meredith exclaimed.

"Kids! Dinner is ready!" Carolyn yelled.

All of the kids came running down.
"Sketty!" Derek and Meredith yelled in happiness.

Everyone started eating.
"Mer honey, your mom is on call tonight. So you're staying here tonight."
"Ok!"

They finished dinner, and Mer and Derek went in his room. She stayed there so often, they practically shared the room. They were thinking about even buying her a bed.

The next morning, Mer woke up. She jumped up to see Derek still asleep.

Wake him. Or no.
She jumped on his bed and took a pillow and hit him.

"Wake up silly!"
"Ugh Mer!"
"It's your birthday! You have to wake up!"
"Ok. Ok. I'm awake."

"I got you this!"

Meredith handed him a bracelet that she made with yarn and beads.

"I have one too! So we will always be best friends!"
"Thanks Mer!"

"I'm hungry."
"Me too. We can get Muesli!"
"What is that?"
"Just try it."
"Ok."

They went downstairs. Derek grabbed a chair and pulled it to the cabinet.
"Be careful."
"Don't worry. I'm Superman. I won't fall."

He grabbed the cereal. He poured him and Mer a bowl, and they both ate.

After that, they had to get ready for his birthday party.

Mark was there. So was all of Derek's friends. Derek was six. The funny thing is, Mer's birthday is exactly a week apart from his.

After the party, they went home. Mark also stayed. The Shepherds took him in. So he was living with them.

They all went to bed. And fell asleep. Little did they know, this wouldn't be the last time.
