TW: Suicide, car wreck, depression"Hello?" The phone had been ringing, people had been crying, and a mother had been trying to soothe the kids while wanting to break down herself.
"Yes......really?!.....Yes, yes! Oh my!........Is she alright?"
All kids jumped up when they heard that.
"Ok." Carolyn set the phone down and looked at the teens in front of her.
"Meredith is in the hospital." She sighed. She wasn't sure if it was out of relief that she was okay or that she was upset her daughter was hurt. Maybe even the fact that said daughter has been in the hospital more times than normal. The daughter who she loved very much.
"Why, what happened?" Derek asked, his voice strained.
"I will tell you all later. Mark, you have your license, can you take your dad's jeep and drive a few of you kids?"
"Of course, ma."
Everyone sorted into the van and jeep and left for Seattle Grace.
-
"There's a bleeder in the pericardium!" The heart surgeon exclaimed. As he suctioned and clamped and got Meredith's body in control, Christopher was starting to stitch up her incision.
"Ok Shepherd, you're out." Richard demanded.
"But-,"
"You finished. Out, go find your family."
He took off his gloves, scrubbed out, and left.
He was happy that nothing terrible happened, except for a few bleeders here and there, but his daughter was lying on a table with multiple hands operating on her.
"Carolyn." He said as he turned his wife around and into a hug.
He didn't dare cry. Not in front of his kids, or his adopted ones.
All the kids sat down, mixes of expressions on their faces.
"Meredith was hit...by a car. She is ok, but she won't look great." Christopher said while the kids burst into another round of sobs and comforting each other.
"Nancy, hun, will you go get everyone something to snack on?" Carolyn asked and handed her oldest a 50 dollar bill.
"Yea, ma." The pain was lacking her voice.
"Omg, that poor girl." A stranger said as the TV was switched on in the waiting room.
Everyone turned to look at the news channel. The video of cars swerving around and Meredith's body flying into trees of the side of the road.
Everyone gasped and broke down ten times more, even Christopher was crying.
The TV showed a news reporter recording Meredith going into the ambulance.
"Why would they record that?" Christopher fumed.
"For money, for fricking money." Derek said.
"I feel bad for the family." The same woman said.
But no one said who they were to Meredith. They just cried.
Nancy came back with water and sandwiches.
"Is that..Eliza?" Jackson asked, looking at the family across the waiting room.
"Yea..and Thatcher." Mark nodded.
"Who's Thatcher?" April asked.
"Meredith's biological father." Derek said.
"Oh."
Just then, Richard walked up to them and explained.
"She's up in the ICU. Whether she wakes up soon or not isn't up to us. But before you go see her, prepare yourself. She won't look like the Meredith you know." He sighed and gave a sympathetic smile to the family. "But she is alive."
Then he walked towards Thatcher, but they didn't pay attention to that. They just ran to her room.
Derek slowly opened the door. Trying to prepare his mind. He had seen her in a coma before, but this was different. She looked broken.
Tubes were everywhere. Her face was shades of purples and blacks. Her arm was in a cast and her leg was too. Stitches sewed up each gash over her. Her head was shaved and had a bandage over it.
"She's a superhero..." Derek sighed and sat down next to her bed.
