"Hey baby. I'm so glad you could make it. I just ordered us some drinks."
Kristen, his fiancée, gave him a slight smile but he could tell she wasn't happy. He pulled out the dining chair for her to take a seat.
"Look Kit, I'm sorry. We were really onto something in the studio today."
"I don't even know why I try anymore." Kristen said rolling her eyes.
"Why- what do you mean?"
"I don't know why I ever thought you could love me more than your music."
"Kristen, that's absolutely insane, of course I love you more than my music."
"Really? Because it seems like our relationship always comes second."
"Are you serious right now? This is so out of left field Kristen, I don't even know where this is coming from."
"Exhibit A, you canceled my birthday dinner because you and Mick had a meeting with the board execs of a record company and it was the last night they would be in town. Exhibit B, you were late to our own engagement party because you and John 'lost track of time' playing the instrumentals for your joint album. Exhibit C..."
"Okay. Okay. I get it." Lindsey said cutting her off.
"Do you even know what today is?" She questioned.
Lindsey looked around nervously, his heart sank. Shit...
"Oh it's no big deal, just the fourth anniversary of when we started dating."
Lindsey looked down at his phone. Fuck she was right.
"Kristen. Look I'm sorry. I understand how I can be sometimes but Christ I've been doing this since you met me. You know how dedicated and passionate I am about my music."
"I really thought I could change you Linds. I thought I could take this broken man and settle him down and change him. But you know what I've realized after all this time? I can't. I can't change you Linds, no matter how hard I want us to work out. You have to be the one to want to change, and you don't. Your music is your first love and I get that, but don't expect me to be your second. I don't deserve that."
Kristen looked down at the engagement ring on her finger, she slowly took it off and placed it in Lindsey's hand. Kristen got up and walked out of the restaurant without saying another word. Lindsey didn't even try to follow her because he knew she was right and he knew there was nothing she could do to change him. She did deserve more.
