Day Eighteen

Yesterday was a long day for Fitz.

He had physical, medical checkups, and then he began working back in the lab again.

Jemma was always by his side and he enjoyed that, but he wished he could just remember!

It couldn't be too hard, he just had to think about the last thing he remembers, but he just can't!

He had physical training today too, and he wasn't ready.

Jemma had a long night working in the lab and she slept along side him last night too.

He kissed her forehead and headed off to physical. He didn't want to wake her, she looked so peaceful.

He grabbed his jacket and headed out of the bunk. Time for another day of training.

"Goodmorning, Fitz," he was greeted by Tripp.

"Mornin'."

They were both tired but knew that if they finished it quickly they could both go back to their bunks for naps.

"I can't do it!" Fitz shouted, dropping the bar. His arm was still very much so damaged.

"Yes, you can, Fitz. Put all your strength into it."

He sighed and grabbed the bar again. He saw Jemma approach the doorway and quickly dropped the bar.

"Jemma, hello."

She smiled and waved, "Hi, Fitz. If you need anything I'll be in the workroom with Skye."

He nodded, and smiled as she left.

Jemma walked into the workroom and sat next to Skye.

"I'm worried, Skye."

She looked up from her phone and locked the screen, giving Jemma her undivided attention.

"What do you mean? About what?"

She hesitated, trying to think if she was serious about she what she was gonna say.

"Fitz. He doesn't seem to be getting better and I think it's because of me. He's barely remembering."

Skye shook her head.

"No, not true. You're pushing yourself down, don't. Fitz is doing just fine."

"I just feel like I make him worse, maybe, I should leave."

Bad idea.

"What?! Are you insane? He'd never get through if you weren't here!"

Jemma knew it was probably true. She needed him, too.

"You're right, I'm sorry. Crazy talking, I think I need some tea," she said, gathering herself up and walking to the cabinet.

"Plus, he loves you and when he gathers his memories back, he's going to want you there."

That made Jemma smile, a lot.

"Want some tea?"

She asked, and grabbed two tea bags from the box.

~
"Can I have a break?"

Fitz said, trying to catch his breath.

"Yeah, go ahead. 10 minutes, then we have an hour left and we're over."

That made him happy, he was so tired and just wanted to take a nap.

He walked into the workroom and grabbed a water from the fridge.

"Hello Skye, Simmons."

They both waved and gave him a small, "hi."

"Hows physical going?"

He rolled his eyes, "I hate it. It's so hard, he keeps telling me 'use all your strength' but I barely have any with this stupid broken arm."

Jemma felt bad, she was the reason he broke it.

Damn it, Jemma. Stop putting yourself down. It doesn't help!

They chit-chatted for a few minutes until he had to go train again.

"I feel so bad, I wish he'd remember."

Fitz walked back into the physical room and set his water bottle down.

"I'm back," he said to Tripp, and walked back over to the bars.

He lifted the bar high and then set it back down.

"Fitz, that was great!"

A small smile appeared on his face. He was finally doing it.

He lifted the bar another time.

"That's great! Put all your energy into it!"

He dropped the bar.

Energy.

"Say it again!"

"What? Energy?"

Fitz furrowed his brows.

"Energy..first-first law of thermodynamics...no energy is created and none is destroyed."

"Fitz, man, are you okay?"

Tripp asked, eyeing the way Fitz was frozen.

He snapped his fingers.

"Yeah, no, Jemma. I need Jemma."

He quickly nodded, "I'll go get her."

Tripp shot him a worried look, and went to find the biochemist.

He approached the work room and stood in the doorway.

"Simmons," Tripp said, looking at her.

She looked up from the table, along with Skye.

"Fitz, uh."

"What's wrong with Fitz?"

He shook his head, trying to catch his breath.

"He started muttering something about energy and thermodynamics or something."

Jemma stood up and smiled.

"The first law of thermodynamics," she muttered to herself, before running out the door.

She found the physical room and Fitz was saying things to himself.

"Fitz!"

She stopped at the doorway and he looked up.

"No energy in the universe is created.."

"And none is destroyed," she finished.

He began to slowly walk towards her.

"And every part of us now was once part of some other thing. A moon, a storm cloud, a mammoth," he continued.

"A monkey."

"A monkey," he whispered to himself.

"Leo."

"Jemma."

A small silence and then a break of laughter and tears.

"You remember?"

A small nod came from him and he continued walking towards her.

"I remember!"
