Sarah's Point of View

"So they can really 'peen-alize' you for that?" Emily asked me, shifting away from the wall she'd been leaning on as she crossed her arms.

I'd simply nodded. "Yeah, they can 'pen-alize' you for it."

"You mean 'peen-alize,'" Emily rose an eyebrow.

I couldn't help but crack up at her weird pronunciation. It was so close to sounding like another word.

I glanced across the room at my friend, Mia, who was currently sitting on my bed. She looked just as confused as I did.

"No, I mean 'pen-alize,'" I replied.

Emily noticed that Mia and I were exchanging humorous glances, and seemed to only be more annoyed. Mia couldn't hold back her snickering, and when I accidentally made eye contact with her, I released a snort.

Rolling her eyes, she grumbled, "You're laughing because you guys know I'm right."

"Em, no one I've met has ever said it like that," I told her, trying to hold back exactly how humorous I found the situation.

"Yeah, Sarah's right. I've never heard that pronunciation. I think it's pen," Mia chimed in, standing up. She pulled together a straighter face than I could, being more serious for my sister's sake.
