Hayes Grier

I'm sitting on my living room couch just casually watching YouTube videos of slam poetry while drinking hot tea. It was Friday the 13th and I had the day off of school for president's day weekend. Naturally, being the horror fanatic that I am it is 3pm and I have already watched Friday the 13th. Throughout the week at school I could not stop mentioning to my friends at how happy and delighted I was that Friday the 13th happens three times this year. In February, March, and November.
However, back to slam poetry. I have not changed since the moment I woke up. My hair is the same, messy ponytail, my clothes are the same, sweatpants and sweatshirt, and I'm rocking the no bra.
As I am watching these videos I feel a tap on my shoulder which startles me a bit and I turn around. To my utter surprise I see Hayes. I probably had a mix of confusion written on my face and surprise which he greeted with a smile and a kiss on my forehead.
"Hey y/n." He says as he hops over the couch to sit next to me. I pull out my earphones so I can hear him clearly.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" I ask confused.
"Can't I come and see my girlfriend without questions?" He says as he rests his head on my shoulders.
"You know most of the time when someone asks that question the other person answers yes, but I mean as you just saw you came in and I asked a question so I get why you are here. You wanted to see me, that's a reason." I say as I think about it and laugh slightly at the end.
"Yeah, and it's a lot shorter than me asking 'can't I come and see my girlfriend without questions'." He says. I smile at the dry humor that's floating in the dense air as I remove my laptop from my lap and shut it.
"So what's up? Have you done anything today?" I ask.
"I mean I woke up around eleven am, and all the guys were at our house so we hung out, filmed a couple videos, the usual." He says. "You?" He asks with a grin on his face because he already knows. But he wants me to tell him anyways, because as he has mentioned before he likes it when I talk to him, especially about things I am passionate about.
"Well I woke up at around eight thirty am, but I thought it was a lot later so I got up only to be disappointed. I ate breakfast while watching Friday the 13th and I have pretty much been surfing the internet and watching YouTube videos the rest of the day." I tell him with a proud smile on my face. Some people could call me lazy or not productive, but to me it honestly depends on how you define productive and whether or not you care what other people think of you. At the end of the day, if I am proud of my accomplishments it has been a productive day. Sure, sometimes I wish I could have done more and I realize that. Not every day is going to be a 'productive' day.
"Sounds like you had a very productive day." Hayes says with a smile. We have been together long enough for him to know and understand why I do certain things and how I feel about aspects of life etc. I am aware that probably eighty percent of teenage relationships don't work out in the end but, I am also aware of the fact that for 14 year olds, we are pretty understanding and intelligent in the aspects of our relationship. Maybe I'm wrong but, hey it's my relationship and who are you to call me out on being comfortable in a relationship when I'm 14?
"It has been a very productive day, but the day is not over yet." I inform him with a smile on my face. For some reason, now that Hayes is around I feel extremely energetic and the smile won't leave my face. "Let's do something! Something big!" I say with wonder reflecting in my eyes. I just have this sudden need to do something big.
"SOMETHING BIG IS HAPPENING OUT OF MY CONTROL!!!" Hayes shouts suddenly causing me to laugh but soon join in. And now we are jumping on my couch holding each other in our arms while we scream at the other the lyrics to a song that we know all too well. Whoever said you needed background music to fill in the background?
As we reach the end of the song we stop jumping and we are holding each other's hands as we say the last line together. "Whoa!" resulting in contagious laughter.
"I think I have an idea for what we can do." I say as a light bulb went off in my head. Hayes' eyebrows raise.
"Do tell me y/n." He replies as he awaits my amazing idea.
"What if we have this competition with each other where we see who knows the words to all of Shawn's songs and both the Jacks." I say with a smile on my face. You might be feeling a bit underwhelmed at my 'amazing' idea, but hey we all have different definitions of amazing. Not every idea has to involve leaving the house. I know what you might be thinking, she sounds so boring, maybe I am boring to you, but I do go out, I do have fun, I do try new things, I do go to parties, but I also cancel plans. Hey, sometimes I just don't want to go out, and maybe that might last a week but if you really cared you would come find me. That's one of the reasons I like Hayes. He understands me. He goes out more than I do and that's fine but he also finds me. He spends time with me and he doesn't just do it because it makes me happy, he does it because it makes him happy too.
"That is an awesome idea. I am so going to win this!" He hollers and I laugh with him.
"No background music, we shout together and we rap together." I say. I pretty much made this game up on the spot so there aren't that many rules.
"Alright, we got this, what is going to be the first song?" He asks as he jumps around with his game face on.
"Like that." I say. The song is so catchy. I look at Hayes and count down from three and then it starts.
Our incessant shouting has probably driven away all of the neighbors and we are now onto our fourth song which is The Weight.
"Hold on y/n I need some water my throat is so sore and dry from shouting." He says as he holds his throat and walks into the kitchen to get a glass of water. I hoist myself up onto the counter and sit cross-legged as I watch him. He comes over and stands in front of me as he downs the entire glass then sets it down on the counter with an overly dramatic sigh of satisfaction. I just sit in front of him with an amused smile on my face at his theatricality.
"How are you not exhausted from this?" He asks after a moment's pause with his hands on either side of where I sit on the counter leaning closer.
"Well it just so happens, that this is the only thing I do." I say as I lean in closer to him.
"Really? The only thing you do is go around screaming lyrics to songs?" He says as he leans in even closer so that now, as we stare into each other's eyes we don't notice that our lips are 2.381 millimeters apart. "Actually come to think of it, that is the only thing you do." He says with a small chuckle which causes a smile to form on my lips but those 2.381 millimeters remain the same.
We are both looking at the other's lips then averting our eyes to the other's both asking for permission, and both are granted. As those 2.381 millimeters soon decrease to 0 my legs uncross and fall over the edge of the counter wrapping around his torso. As those 2.381 millimeters disappear his hands find my waist and pull me closer. And as those 2.381 millimeters cease to exist we are kissing. We are kissing. Oh did I forget to mention that this is my first kiss, and as a child I always pictured it to be like the fairytale only to have that ruined by all my friends saying that 'it happens when it happens 'it's not what you expect' 'it doesn't matter anymore' 'you won't remember it' and 'it sucks'. Well yeah, it's my first kiss and Hayes is aware of this. So as those 2.381 millimeters are no more I have my fairytale.
So I'm not in a dress, or wearing makeup, or out on a date, but I don't care. My fairytale was never about what I was wearing, it was about who it was, how the kiss was, and how it started. It was hesitant and cautious at first, but it was understanding and wonderful as it continued. So what if it's in my kitchen! Your first kiss fairytale concoction shouldn't be of what you are wearing or where you are, but of who you are with and whether the moment feels right. And as my hands have moved from my lap to the nape of his neck while playing with the ends of his hair it felt right.
"WHOOO!!! Get it Hayes!" I hear hollers from behind me removing me from my fairytale. Hayes doesn't look all too pleased either but faces the guys anyway. As I turn around I see their phones out. Great I can't wait to see myself on snapchat. I hop off the counter and walk over to them.
"Great to see you guys." I say trying to forget what just happened and the fact that they all witnessed it. My cheeks are probably flushed red but then again I haven't even seen Hayes' face. "Is there a reason you are in my house?" I ask pointedly.
"We were looking for Hayes because he wasn't answering our calls so we came to your place to see if you knew where he was, and here he is." Cameron explains.
"What did you guys need?" Hayes asks as he steps forward.
"Nothing really, we just didn't know where you had gone." Johnson replies.
"Well you found me." Hayes says. To be honest this situation is pretty awkward. We don't know what to say, they don't know what to say and we are all just standing in my kitchen at four fifty seven pm.
Four fifty eight pm
"So do you guys want to watch a movie?" I ask them and they agree so they all situate themselves in the living room and turn on the tv. Yeah they kind of know their way around.
"Well that was unexpected." Hayes says as I turn around to face him and blow out a puff of air.
"Yeah, it was." I answer with my still red cheeks.
"I hope that your first kiss was the fairytale you had hoped it to be." He says as he cups my cheeks in his hands. I smile.
"It was, but I've realized that fairytale doesn't describe what I want with you. Nothing describes what I want with you. All I know is that I want everything with you, there is no timeline or plotline to our relationship we can't control everything in our lives, and while that seems a bit scary to me, I am never afraid when I am with you because I know you have my back and I have yours." I tell him and I watch as he smiles throughout my 'speech'.
"Baby, I'll always have your back." He says as he brings me close to his chest in a warm embrace that I return.
2.381 millimeters was all it took for me to realize that I didn't need a fairytale when I had Hayes and 2.381 millimeters is just how thick that fairytale book was.
